Mounted to leaf apparently removed from bound volume, engraved portrait (not of Lardner) mounted to verso with contemporary pencil caption "Minister to England." Some toning and soil, else a Very Good example. Brief note dated simply "Sunday morning" and informing the recipients, unnamed editors of the American journals the "U.S. Gazette," the "Pennsylvanian," the "Courier & Enquirer," and the "Philadelphia Gazette," that "Dr. Lardner having found that the preparation for his lectures will require more time than he expected requests that the advertisement which was left for inspection tomorrow may be allowed to stand over for a few days." In Lardner's hand though written in the third person. Dionysius Lardner (1793-1859) was an Irish scientific author and editor of the 133-volume the "Cabinet Cyclopaedia" (1830-1844). Very Good and sound overall. Often considered to be the first American edition, this imprint is actually preceded by the Brentano's ca. 1898 edition. This edition was published in two states, one in which the text appears on rectos only, the second (including this copy) printed on rectos and versos: "Both editions, that printed on one side and that printed on both sides, are from the same type. It is therefore clear that they are not...two independent editions, but the one-side issue constitutes merely a kind of de-luxe variety, while the two-sided is a cheaper, popular version of the same edition"… Read More
