New York: Orcutt Co, [1898]. Lithograph in colors, 49cm x 32.5cm (19" x 12-3/4"). Printed on thin coated stock, text in three lines below large central image of a bearded laborer. Small marginal loss at left (away from printed area); a few small marginal tears, small area of ink (?) specks at left of image. Overall Very Good. The artwork is unsigned; date and artist supplied by us (see below). Original newsstand advertising poster for the April, 1898 issue of Century, illustrated with a dramatic portrait of a coal worker by the prominent Canadian-American illustrator Jay Hambidge (1867-1924). The portrait is one of a dozen or so by Hambidge published to illustrate an article by Henry Edward Drood on the recent disruptions in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields. Uncommon souvenir view book of Deadwood, Lead City, Hot Springs and vicinity, with many views of gold mining operations around Deadwood as well as several Native American portraits on the Crow and Sioux reservations (one captioned extremely offensively), city views, the spas at Hot Springs, etc. Two dozen or so copies in institutional collections, but not frequent in commerce; this a rather nice copy. Monthly newsletter of the Black Lung Association, a worker-led advocacy group that coalesced around the passage of coal mining legislation requiring mine operators to admit liability for pneumoconiosis, a chronic lung disease affecting soft-coal miners. The group's efforts led to the Black Lung Act of 1972, the first legislation specifically to provide relief for black-lung infected miners. This issue includes an article ("Take Action") by Arnold Miller, the principal figure behind the Black Lung fight.

Red cloth, titled in gilt on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 232pp. Straight, unmarked, Near Fine copy in the original pictorial dustwrapper, unclipped ($2.50 price on front flap), lightly rubbed at spine ends, Very Good or better. A novel of the West Virginia coalfields, with a disastrous cave-in as the central plot device. The novel was written as an exposé of dangerous conditions in American mines, and concludes with a plea to readers to support a House bill requiring owners to close mines that did not meet federal safety standards. The author was the grandson of economic reformer Henry George. A very nice copy of a book not seen frequently in commerce; plentiful in institutional collections but most appear to be circulating copies. HANNA 1379.

Boise, ID: The Statesman Shop, [1907]. First edition. Octavo. Printed wrappers; 130pp. Light wear and soil, with bumps at crown and heel of spine; still a clean, sound copy, Very Good. Full transcription of Borah's closing statement as prosecuting attorney in the case of Idaho vs. William D. Haywood et. al., for the 1905 murder of former Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg. Borah lost the case to the brilliant defense of Clarence Darrow (the assassin was eventually discovered to be Harry Orchard, a former Wobbly turned stool-pigeon for the Cripple Creek Miner's Association). Though unsuccessful in prosecuting this case, Borah went on to a lengthy career in politics, serving six consecutive terms as U.S. Senator from Idaho.
