Backstrip torn on Vol. 2, partially detached; both volumes have material loss at spine crown and heel; boards show moderate rubbing, chipping and wear, especially to extremities. Textblocks foxed, with offsetting to text; ex libris and ownership signatures on ffeps; a Good reading copy, sound and complete. A chronicle of "the olden days" of Philadelphia, intended to serve as a record of the city's history and customs, as well as changes and improvements. This 1850 edition contains information on Philadelphia and surrounding counties, plus histories of local Native American tribes and European settlers, events leading to the Revolutionary War, plus sundry facts on climate, industry, geography, and miscellany.

Merriam is primarily known now as a pioneer in mammalogy. His journeys as a naturalist led to an interest in Native American cultures, and he abandoned his scientific career to conduct ethnological research with tribes in California.
