Description:
n.p., n.d. (Detroit, ca 1997?). Machine lithograph, 18" x 22", printed in black and red on white background. Signed by the artist lower right. Fine. Poster published during the Detroit News Strike, when staff from Detroit's two major dailies, the News and the Free Press, striking over wages and conditions, left to form their own weekly tabloid, The Detroit Sunday Journal, which ran through 1999. The poster depicts four uniformed policemen forcibly removing a striking worker from the picket line, with the one-word caption "A' rest." On her website, Detroit graphic designer Susan Kramer identifies herself during this period "as an employee of the Detroit Newspaper Agency, active member of the Communication Workers of America...and assisted in publishing the Detroit Sunday Journal." Another of Kramer's posters, "Standing Strong in Detroit," was sold to raise more than $30,000 to support the strike (see: atdetroit-[dot]-com/susankramer).

San Francisco: Cubery & Co, n.d., ca. 1894. First Edition. Original broadside flyer (30x45cm.) printed in black on off-white stock; faint vertical fold, stock rather brittle and uniformly toned due to poor paper quality, several shallow losses along extremities, none approaching text. Near Very Good overall. Flyer for the People's Party, a populist agrarian political party founded in 1891 which merged with the Democratic Party in 1896. Mrs. Carrie F. Young appears to have begun her political career in the early 1880s as a member and lecturer of the Oakland Health and Temperance Club and superintendent of the Scientific Temperance Instruction in the Public Schools of Alameda County. First mention of Young lecturing for the People's Party appears to date around 1894, when she delivered an address on white slavery at a Populist ratification meeting in June, 1894 (see the San Francisco Call, June 24, 1894). Uncommon broadside: OCLC locates one copy as of September, 2016, at Berkeley, giving the date as 1892.

Faint horizontal fold smoothed out at center, a few tiny tears along margins, expected toning; Very Good or better. Well-preserved example of this large Calavera broadside attributed to Manuel Manilla (see Rothenstein, Posada: Messenger of Mortality, p.172) a Mexican illustrator and engraver who was a follower of Posada's. At center is a nightmarish image of the much-disliked president Victoriano Huerta, who came to power in a coup during the Mexican Revolution. The calavera depicts Huerta "metamorphosed into a giant spider, often spoken of as a cut by Posada. This violently anti-Huerta sheet could not have been published earlier than July 15, 1914, the date of Huerta's resignation.
