Description:
Frederick Albert Cook (1865-940) was an American doctor and explorer who, in 1906, claimed that he had reached the peak of Mount McKinley, making him the first to scale North America's highest mountain. He had not. At the time, there were questions, inquiries, and an endless trail of fake photographs, incorrect maps and bribed witnesses.
This book's authors spent decades gathering evidence to disprove Cook's claim; this book details how false it was.
It is 193 pages, including loads of photos and maps--and a color pull-out map.
Unclipped dust jacket. Almost no shelfwear--the dust jacket is deliberately designed to look like an old photo album.
Until now, it was unopened. But, just around the edges, the paper has started to yellow. That may also be deliberate--I don't know. But it's an expensively-produced piece. Beautiful book.

Description:
This is a first edition of The Duchess of Windsor: The Secret Life, written by the British writer Charles Higham and published in 1988. It was an enormous best-seller.
Wallis, the Duchess of Windsor, was one of the most famous women in history, the American divorcee who captured the King of England, Edward VIII, and cost him his throne. Major new documentary evidence, classified at the time, from long-suppressed archives in France, England, and the United States, uncovers her passionate affair with a top-ranking political figure, the duke's romantic involvement with a male equerry, the secret radio broadcasts the couple made to Hitler, and the blackmail plot in Paris that almost brought them, and the British royal family, to ruin.
482 pages with numerous photographs.
This copy's dust jacket is white, so there is the expected yellowing of the paper. The mark on the top right of the dust jacket is remnants of the price tag. The paper of the book has darkened as well. The original owner wrote her name,… Read More

Description:
This is a lovely leather-bound copy of the classic novel The Scarlet Letter: A Romance, a work of historical fiction by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864). First published in 1850, it is set in Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642 to 1649, and tells the story of Hester Prynne who conceives a daughter through an affair and then struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. Containing a number of religious and historic allusions, the book explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt.
This copy was published in 1979 by the Franklin Library (Franklin Mint). It is dark red leather with an elaborate gold design on the cover and spine. It has a bound-in silk bookmark.
Inside, the book is perfect. Lovely thick paper, creamy white. Chapter headings are in red. Marbelized endpapers. There are several illustrations but I don't want to pick through the book to count how many there are.
Although it has a bookplate on the inside front cover (which you can remove), it has… Read More
