Cloth binding with marbled boards. 79pp. A cyrillic/Russian language printing of a chapter from Karl Kautsky's work, "The Class Struggle," apparently chapter four titled "The Commonwealth of the Future." Kautsky was a noted Czech-German philosopher and a leading propent of Marxism, contributing to the formation and refining of its philosophical and political ideals. This copy from the Socialist Party of Chelsea (Massachusetts), perhaps from their library, bearing two circular party stamps on the title page depicting a handshake. Slightly ex-library, with the aforementioned stamps present, as well as a small paper label with a shelf number, at the head of the spine. (8), 20, 726, (8) pp. Collated and complete, with a few pages misnumbered. A work examining various aspects of the Bible, seeking, among other topics, to prove that Greek deities originated from the source of Moses, and that the Old Testament was the source of Greek myths. Huet also sought to debunk Cartesian philosophy, as well as disputing the work of Spinoza in his Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. This work marked his first attack on the philosophy of Descartes. (see Shelford: Transforming the Republic of Letters for previous information). Pierre Daniel Huet was a French scholar, as well as serving as Bishop of Soissons, and was noted for his skepticism, especially his anti-Cartesian views. POOR condition. A work of literary criticism/philosophy examining the historical background of Die Leiden Des Jungen Werther. In GOOD condition. Heavy darkening along the extremities. Minor scuffing and wrinkling to the wraps. An address in pencil on the upper front cover. Minor creasing to the lower corner, with a large faint crease on the rear cover. Interior solid, with general darkening to the pages and writing and underlining in pencil throughout the book.

No jacket. 171 pp. A study of German philosophy, written in light of World War I and reflecting the author's assertions that during his prior readings and encounters with German philosophy, there was something sinister, hollow and aggressive in it. GOOD condition. Covers faded, with some minor spotting, staining and discoloration. Light soiling. Some scuffing. Extremities scuffed. Owners' signatures present. Text block weak but intact. Scattered pencil lines in the margins and text throughout, with notes on the last endpaper.

Oneida Reserve: Free Church Association, 1851. Original Wraps. Good. Pagination runs 81-96. Lacking covers, if any were issued. Features a lengthy essay by John Humphrey Noyes under the column, "Home Talk." Noyes founded the utopian community at Oneida, New York, espousing socialist ideals and communal living, including free love and multiple marriages, while also believing that one could live within Christian philosophies. In GOOD condition. Several large creases present, as well as many small wrinkles and creases along the extremities. Top page corners curled over. Very minor soiling and toning to the paper. One page printed slightly askew.

Steiner, founder of a form of humanistic spiritualism called anthroposophy, was influenced by Goethe's view of the world and wrote this work as part of an explanation of that view, as well as using it to contextualize his own philosophies of the world. A short essay reflecting on habit in human beings, exploring the benefits to 'instinctively' carrying out daily tasks, but also the perils of bad habits in modern society. Citing the stresses of meeting modern demands, the author addresses the use of drugs and alcohol to address 'weaknesses' that a person may feel, while also citing Eddyism, the Emmanuel movement, Christian Science, progressive causes and even the suffragist movement as bad habits or supplements that people use to treat themselves in the face of modern inadequacy. FAIR/GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy soiling to the covers, with dark scuffing, uneven fading and some creasing. Dark dampstain to the upper rear cover, affecting the upper margin of the book. Text somewhat browned.

The second volume of a work issued in five volumes spanning the years 1845 to 1858, with the fifth appearing as a fragment posthumously in 1862. This was Humboldt's attempt to combine the teachings of the various sciences into a unified theory that would fit nature. Alexander Von Humboldt was a German scientist, explorer and writer, known for his work on botanical geography. GOOD condition. Moderate fading to the spine. Minor to moderate scuffing to the covers, with minor uneven fading and soiling. Extremities scuffed and bumped. Interior solid, with moderate foxing to the endpapers.
