Incomplete Commentary on Matthew (Opus imperfectum) (Ancient Christian Texts)

By James A. Kellerman and Thomas C. Oden

IVP Academic, 2010. Has church bookplate on inside front cover, and an initial written on free end page, otherwise in like new condition. Jacket fine. In the translator's introduction to this volume, James Kellerman relates the following story: As Thomas Aquinas was approaching Paris, a fellow traveler pointed out the lovely buildings gracing that city. Aquinas was impressed, to be sure, but he sighed and stated that he would rather have the complete Incomplete Commentary on Matthew than to be mayor of Paris itself. Thomas's affection for the work attests its great popularity during the Middle Ages, despite its significant missing parts--everything beyond the end of Matthew 25, with further gaps of Matthew 8:11--10:15 and 13:14--18:35. Although there are gaps, what remains is quite lengthy, so much so that we offer the work in two volumes, comprising fifty-four homilies. While the early-fifth-century author displays a few Arian propensities in a handful of passages, for the most part the commentary is moral in nature and therefore orthodox and generic. The unknown author, who for several centuries was thought to be John Chrysostom, follows the allegorizing method of the Alexandrians, but not by overlooking the literal meaning. His passion, above all, is to set forth the meaning of Matthew's Gospel for his readers. Here, for the first time, this ancient work is made available in English, ably translated by James A. Kellerman and edited by Thomas C. Oden.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine.

Image As Insight: Visual Understanding in Western Christian and Secular Culture

By Miles, Margaret Ruth

Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.: Beacon Press, 1985. First edition. From Library Journal Miles (Harvard Divinity School) carefully develops a discussion of language, hermeneutics, and the neglected hermeneutics of visual images. She then gives a lengthy consideration to visual images in fourth-century Roman churches, to images of women in 14th-century Tuscan painting, and to visions and images in 16th-century Protestant and Roman Catholic Reform. Her final chapters define the applicability of image use findings to a contemporary society flooded with secular media images, yet spiritually improverished in terms of images. A truly exciting book which will be of special interest to artists, art historians, church historians, theologians, and those concerned with hermeneutics. Carolyn M Craft, English, Philosophy, & Foreign Languages Dept., Longwood Coll., Farmville, Va. Copyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc. . Not Indicated. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Beyond Turk and Hindu: Rethinking Religious Identities in Islamicate South Asia

By David Gilmartin (Editor), Bruce B. Lawrence (Editor)

Gainesville, Florida, U.S.A.: Univ Pr of Florida, 2000. First edition. "[Sets] the stage for a rewriting of nearly a thousand years of history to create new understandings of the nature of cultural encounters. . . . The volume breaks free from the polemics of present-day politics and historicist distortions that have seeped into most standard texts."--David Lelyveld, Cornell University This collection challenges the popular presumption that Muslims and Hindus are irreconcilably different groups, inevitably conflicting with each other. Invoking a new vocabulary that depicts a neglected substratum of Muslim-Hindu commonality, the contributors demonstrate how Indic and Islamicate world views overlap and often converge in the premodern history of South Asia. The Great Heresies

By Hilaire Belloc

Manassas, Virginia, U.S.A.: Trinity Communications, 1987. Here the great Catholic historian Hilaire Belloc analyzes five of the greatest heresies of all time: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism, Protestantism, and the Modern Attack, showing that the world would be vastly different today if Arianism or Albigensianism had survived--and how it is different because Protestantism survived. He predicts the re-emergence of Islam and explains how the Modern Attack is the worst threat to the Catholic Church ever. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
