INTO THE THIRTIES: STYLE AND DESIGN 1927 - 1934

By Klaus Jurgen Sembach

(Subject: Between the World Wars - General) The late 1920s and early 1930s saw the general acceptance of what are still regarded as the best elements in modern design, and yet this period in the applied arts coincided with the Great Depression, political upheaval and social unrest. Text and illustrations show this era in poster, china and glassware design, in the buildings of Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Gropius, in the furniture of Breuer and Thonet, in the photographs of Cecil Beaton and Edward Steichen and in the Films of Fritz Lange and Rene Clair. GERNIKA: EL BOMBARDEO

By Imanol Villa

(Subject: Between the World Wars - General) Spanish text. The bombing of Guernica in the Spanish Civil War was the first mass air attack on a densly populated town. It was carried out at the behest of the Spanish Nationalist Government by its allies, the Nazi German Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione Legionaria. It was a war crime by definition, even before the work of Pablo Picasso brought its full horror to the world's attention. A huge international outcry resulted whose echo continues to shake our consciences. The book includes a Spanish language DVD which tells the story through the eyes of those who were there and well known military historians. (Published: 2008) (Publisher: Idem 4 SL, Spain) (ISBN: 9788493600563) (Pagination: Large format, 104pp, c200 b/w & colour illustrations, DVD) (Condition: As new in illustrated boards.) UL-XXXXXX

BENN'S TWENTIETH-CENTURY HISTORIES: THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR

By Jack Gibbs

(Subject: Between the World Wars - General) For nearly 100 years up to 1936, Spain had hovered on the edge of civil war as the traditional powers of Church, Monarch and Army failed to cope with the problems of a world power in decline. Strong factions developed and the author shows how inherent disintegration was a major cause of the Republicans' eventual defeat. He also discusses the extent of international intervention, and how Germany, blatantly fighting on the Fascist side experimented with new machines and techniques in anticipation of the Second World War. (Published: 1973) (Publisher: Ernest Benn Ltd.) (ISBN: 051017809X) (Pagination: 128pp illustrations, maps) (Condition: Good in d/w) UL-XXXXXX

COMRADES: PORTRAITS FROM THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR

By Paul Preston

(Subject: Between the World Wars - General) A new interpretation of the course, causes and characters of the Spanish Civil War. Starting at the extreme right of the political spectrum and moving across it to the extreme left, using the lives of ten key individuals, the author builds up a vivid picture of how the War came to pass, and how those who started, suffered and stopped it were coloured by the experience. Here are psychological profiles of the La Pasionaria, Primo de Rivera, Salvador Madariaga, and of the enigma himself, Generalissimo Franco. VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED

By Gordon Thomas and Max Morgan-Witts

(Subject: Between the World Wars - General) In May 1939, the MS St Louis set sail from Hamburg carrying 937 German Jews seeking asylum from Nazi persecution. Unknown to the captain there were members of the Gestapo among the crew. This is the gripping, day-by-day account of how those refugees on board the liner struggled to survive. The ship sailed to Cuba where the refugees were refused entry as either tourists or political asylum seekers. Similar refusals were given from America and Canada. They returned to Europe where many later perished under the Nazis. GERMANY AND EUROPE 1919-1939

By John Hiden

(Subject: Between the World Wars - General) A short study surveying Germany's foreign policy from the German viewpoint over the entire inter-war period. The approach, which sets Germany in a full European context, is not narrowly diplomatic. The author has now revised his text to take account of new scholarship since the book first appeared in 1977.
