A Trip to Manitoba; or, Roughing It On the Line

By Fitzgibbon, Mary Agnes (1851-1915)

Toronto: Rose-Belford Pub., 1880. -----The scan you see is the book you get. Dark green cloth stamped in gilt & black & blind, headband, [2], 1 leaf, [v]-xvi, [13]-267 p.; 19 cm. (7 1/2"), Very Good Plus (I hesitate to grade an 1880 book Near Fine but this one is very close), former owners ink name neatly & in small letters on title page, faint to minor shelf wear, just a touch of yellowing on inside boards. "The title is now misleading. We must remember that, at the time Fitzgibbon was here, Manitoba laid claim to an area much further east than its current boundary with Ontario. Her account illustrates the route people took if they were in a hurry to get from Toronto to Deception Lake in those days: all aboard for Sault Ste. Marie by train, then into the US and overland to the Mississippi, up that river by steamboat, over to the Red and up to Winnipeg once more by steamboat. Then travellers climbed into the waggons for a vertebrae-crushing ride over the corduroy Dawson Trail southeast to Northwest Angle, by boat to Clearwater Bay and overland to the camp at Deception Lake. Her observations of the country & the people she met along the way are personal & lively; full of humour and empathy, too. She also helped her great aunt Catherine Parr Traill prepare her last two books for publication: Pearls and Pebbles (1894) and Cot and Cradle Stories (1895). In 1894 her biography of her grandfather, A Veteran of 1812; The Life of James FitzGibbon was published. It remains the book for which she is best known, although she wrote or co-wrote numerous other articles and at least four other books over the span of her career." Brown cloth with gilt lettering & tooled bands to spine, 256 pages with illustrations plus 8 b & w plates, Assumed 1st William Briggs ediiton, no indication of reprint or further date. Very Good Plus condition with minor edge wear & a few brownish spots on outside margins, with two small light blue stamps "Toronto City Union, The Kings Daughters and Sons" one stamp on back end paper & one stamp on pages 55 top edge. Two of the b & w photos clearly show prisoners bound and beaten, one in a 'cangue' & the other photo showing a person tied streched out, face down and buttocks bare. "With the same escort we passed through his gate, and found under the eaves of his office a row of prisoners seated on the ground wearing a 'cangue'. A 'cague' belongs to the same family as stocks or ankle-squeezers, but is worn round the neck. It is a plank a foot or more in width, and some four feet long, with a hole through the middle. Opened by a hinge, it can be locked round the neck, & there your are with a collar. The Mayor of the city was specially cold in his reception. When I entered he was taken with a violent fit of coughing that lasted nearly all the interview. During one period of cessation he had a prisoner called, stretched on the ground before his window, and then beaten with the paddles I had seen carried through the streets. The beating was accompanied by peculiar long-drawn notes to which the paddles kept time. The prisoner, meanwhile in agony, howled to the gods & spirits of his ancestors to witness that he was innocent. When the poor man had been reduced almost to a pulp, he confessed that he had done the deed, and was removed forthwith to have his wooden collar locked on again, and to spend the night under the droppings of the eaves."
