The Illustrated news of the world and drawing-room portrait gallery of eminent Personages

By London Joint Stock Newspaper Company

London: London Joint Stock Newspaper Company, 1858. 'The Illustrated News of the World and National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Personages' was a new publication with the strong visual emphasis of numerous large woodcuts to illustrate local and world events and featuring several fine steel engravings of eminent persons. A competitor to the existing illustrated magazines: - The Illustrated London News and Punch Magazine. Here we have Nos 22 - 48 or / July 1858 - January 1859. The Journal had only been first published [ No 1] on the 6th February 1858. This is a truly fascinating publication and covers a vast array of subjects. Particularly noticeable when working through the volume is how extensive Queen Victoria's travels were and these and other articles are supported by illustrations. I am only able to provide a small 'snap shot' of examples here: Queen's visit to Birmingham, engravings of Aston Hall, her Boudoir etc; Numerous adverts: Bass's East India Ale - Gallon Casks!; Engraving of the Port of Caernarvon from a Water colour by Thomas S. Robins, with Snowdon in the background; The running debate at Parliament about the state of the Thames; A beautiful Full page engraving of the Royal Agriculture Exhibition held at the Racecourse in Chester; Another of the Grand Reception of the 1st British Ambassador to China. Overall the Book is Good. The Covers are sturdy, and although the front hinge is showing it is secure. The boards themselves are somewhat rubbed {images to follow}. The interior is very good overall, but a few points should be noted: pages are very clean, bar a few occasional fox spots and offsets. The base margins of a small number of pages have been trimmed [ at the time the Journals were bound?] not affecting text or engravings; there are a few tears to the following: 1" -p.120, p.139, p168, p.394, 400, 2" - p.397; 3" - p.120, &; 401-403; 7" - p.419. Each is easily repairable with archival type tape. Collation: Period Journal format, bound in Quarter Leather Boards, comprehensive Indices covering Articles and Engravings. {Representative images will follow}. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good. Illus. by Steel Engravings By D.J.Pound. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.

The art of the Turkish Tale: Volume 2

The art of the Turkish Tale: Volume 2

By Walker, Barbara K. (Barbara Kerlin) 1921-

United States: Texas Tech University Press Series: v. 2: Ministry of Culture publications of the Republic of Turkey ; 1437. This is the Hard Cover version in a Dust Jacket. { see image of copyright page for more details } 'In casting them into English, Walker has paid particular attention to capturing the flavor and excitement of the Turkish telling, while not infringing 'on the narrator's right to have the tale recreated as he had told it'. The Beauty, power, and appeal of the present volume for the general reading public, however, depends largely upon Barbara Walker's own consummate skill as a teller and re-teller of tales and her commitment to conveying as much of the Turkish performance context as possible. In a gesture which is perhaps symptomatic of the reasons for this volume's success, [Barbara Walker] recognizes in the Acknowledgments section each and every tale-teller by name - all forty of them, ranging in age from nine to ninety and coming from the many different walks of life, both urban and rural, to be found in twenty out of Turkey's seventy-four provinces from Mugla to Kars and from Istanbul to Diyarbakir. In presenting the works of 'all these generous bearers of tradition' to an English-speaking audience, [she] has achieved her aim of opening a small window on the art of the Turkish tale in a volume which stands as a tribute to the art of book making as well' - Sarah Moment Atis, Chair, Middle East Studies Program, University of Wisconsin-Madison President, Turkish Studies Association. 'This will stand as a fine, quintessential contribution. One hears the whispers of the original voices in these versions, all of which are artful, recast in colloquial rhythms, and couched in a style that conveys the substance, the shape, the spirit, and the sumptuousness or the simplicity of the tale' - Talat Sait Halman, Turkey's former Minister of Culture, then Ambassador for Cultural Affairs; now Professor of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures, New York University. p.262, illustrated, with Index. [ Location: Landing Case ]. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

By Huygen, Wil.

New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1977. This is the first English translation - the copyright of which is 1977. Often the First English edition is wrongly specified by Dealers as being in 1976 - this is in fact incorrect. The Dutch Version, the true First Edition was in fact the only edition of 1976. Based on Rien Poortvliet and Wil Huygen's scientific observation of the local gnome population in Holland, Gnomes covers all areas of gnome culture: architecture, education, courtship, medicine, industry, and relationships with other mythical creatures. This is a fine looking copy, but has a small nudge to the outer spine. Still an excellent copy. pages are unnumbered but there 212, colour illustrations throughout. ISBN on the flap to Dust Jacket is: 011316. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Illus. by Rien Poortvliet. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
