[ Location: Lothlorien ] Note about the Author: When the family fell upon difficult times, Florence, at age 16, obtained work as a professional illustrator. Initially her work was found within the advertising of Magazines. But soon, authors employed Florence to illustrate their novels or books of short stories. In 1893 the family moved to London and she found no difficulty in continuing to illustrate books. Upton began to sketch out ideas for a children's book, using "penny wooden" dolls as her models. However, without a central character on which to hang the tale, progress came to a standstill. Her aunt, Kate Hudson, found an old toy in her attic that had belonged to the Upton children, left behind from an earlier visit. This toy, which she named Golliwogg, provided inspiration, and the first story was completed in 1894. The publishing house of Longmans, Green & Co. offered her a contract and The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg was published for Christmas 1895. It is difficult nowadays to appreciate the enormous impact that the Golliwogg had at the height of its popularity. Florence Upton's friend and biographer, Edith Lyttelton recollected, 'One of my children, long before we knew who Bertha and Florence Upton were, had a passionate attachment to the doll stories, and a new Golliwogg book was a great excitement in my nursery as in countless others.’ . Hard Cover. Very Good. Illus. by Pictures by Florence K. Upton.. Landscape - cm.21x28..

Little grey rabbit goes to the sea

By Uttley, Alison, 1884-1976

London: Collins, 1954. " Little Grey Rabbit is the lead character in an English classic series of children's books, written by Squirrel, Hare and little Grey Rabbit have all caught colds. Whilst they suck butterscotch and sip blackcurrant tea, their friends bustle about bringing remedies. What they really need, though, says Mrs Hedgehog, is a change of air! "They ought to have a day at the sea," advises Wise Owl. "You'll get rid of your sneezes when you feel the sea breezes." So, in a blue caravan drawn by Duke the horse, Hare, Squirrel, little Grey Rabbit and all their friends set off for the sea. At journey's end, when they feel the warm sand under their feet and the sea air in their fur and feathers, all the animals are filled with joy. Little curling waves sing to Grey Rabbit, Squirrel goes paddling and Hare braves a swim. But the seaside is not quite as restful as it appears: wild gulls and cliff-top climbing make everyone's hearts beat faster. At the end of a happy day, as the setting sun casts a golden pathway in the waves, the party of sleepy friends clamber into the caravan, and Duke takes them home.
