The pilgrims progress : from this world to that which is to come, delivered under the similitude of a dream : wherein is discovered the manner of his setting out, his dangerous journey and safe arrival at the desired Country

By Bunyan, John 1628-1688

Edinburgh: T.C. & E.C. Jack, Ltd, 1904. This is the 1904 copy of the illustrated version by Byam Shaw, it is a First edition thus: vi, 393 pages, colour frontis portrait; 29 unnumbered coloured leaves of plates ; 24 cm. The Pilgrim's Progress has been published in many guises. This copy is illustrated by John Byam Liston Shaw (13 November 1872 - 26 January 1919), commonly known as Byam Shaw, was a British painter, illustrator, designer and teacher. From 1890, Shaw studied at the Royal Academy Schools where he won the Armitage Prize in 1892 for his work The Judgement of Solomon. The book here is in very nice condition, now with a protective glassine type jacket, which is, of course, removeable. In the original burgundy cloth boards, decorated in the Art Nouveau style, with gilt title within a circular vignette to the upper board. With floral endpapers and with a previous owner decorative bookplate of Betty Mitford. Tightly and securely bound, pages and illustrations are very good, with only mild foxing to the outer edges of the pages, barely affecting any of the facing pages as such. There are a couple of surface fleck marks to upper cover, again these are barely noticeable. A very decent copy of this book, published similarly over the ensuing years. However, note that this copy was published in Edinburgh and conforms to the pagination of the 1904 edition, with the precise number of plates. Later copies often had only 16 colour plates.[ Location: FP2 ]. Hard Cover. Very Good+. Illus. by Shaw, Byam 1872-1919 / 30 Colour Plates. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

By Home, Gordon Cochrane.

London: A & C Black, 1911. SERIES: Beautiful Britain. 63 pages, 11 unnumbered leaves of plates : colour illustrations, map ; 23 cm. Index. This is a wonderful survivor and a charming book of the period. What makes this one exceptional is the condition. The book itself is very clean, bright and square, pages and illustrations are in super condition. However, to have such a wonderful dust jacket, in such exceptional condition is a real bonus. This is very much in the Art Nouveau style, and only has the slightest spine end rubs. An early dust jacket but a rare survivor. [ Location: BR1/1/1 ]. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo.

By Ellenport, Samuel B.

Boston [Mass.]: Harcourt Bindery, 1980. This text gives an account of a method of hand-binding whereby the design is pressed onto the book from a single brass plate in one procedure. The historical development of this process is explained and there are plates of the brass dies used by the Harcourt Bindery. "Five hundred copies were designed by Bruce Chandler. The plates have been printed directly from the original brass dies. Numbers 1-10 are signed by the author and bound in full morocco; 11-35 are signed by the author and bound in one-half morocco; remaining numbered copies are bound in linen over boards." - colophon. 25, [200] p. : ill.,some col. ; 33cm. + prospectus.
