The upstart earl : a study of the social and mental world of Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork, 1566-1643

By Canny, Nicholas P.

Cambridge [Cambridgeshire] : Cambridge University Press, 1982. Richard Boyle (1566-1643) is recognised more for the achievements of his children than for his own accomplishments. But in his own lifetime his advancement from an obscure Kentish background to become the wealthiest English landowner of his generation was a matter of the greatest interest and curiosity; all the more so because Boyle matched his economic success with the attainment of an Irish peerage, membership of the English privy council and marriage alliances with some of the more notable families in England and Ireland. This book explains how this phenomenal social feat was achieved, discusses how English society responded to Boyle's advancement and details how Boyle rationalised his elevation to himself, to his children and to the world at large. Richard Boyle was also the father of an extraordinarily large and extremely talented family, and a close study of his diary and voluminous correspondence has shed considerable light on the rearing and education of his children. CONTENTS: Preface; 1. The enigmatic career of Richard Boyle, 1566-1643; 2. The hostile witness: Boyle's career through the eyes of his enemies; 3. The mental world of Richard Boyle; 4. Social ascent and social adjustments in the career of Richard Boyle; 5. The family lief of Richard Boyle; 6. Richard Boyle: Anglo-Irishman; 7. Conclusion: the Boyles, Ireland and the 'New Science'. xii, 211 p. ; 22 cm. A fine copy in a like dust jacket. [ Loaction: Fp1 ]. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 8vo.

Friendly fire : explaining autoimmune Disease

By Isenberg, D.; Morrow, Joseph

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1995. Series: Oxford medical publications. This book deals with a fascinating set of diseases in which the immune system turns traitor and begins to attack the self. The attack may take many forms, culminating in serious skin disease, or disease affecting the joints, heart, lungs, kidneys, and central nervous system, to name only a few of the possibilities. The reader is given a short historical guide to these conditions, followed by a comprehensive description of the different cells and tissues which make up the normally functioning immune system. The factors involved in the development of autoimmune diseases are considered and the mechanisms by which they interact to cause these potentially lethal conditions are analysed. The authors go on to describe the enormous diversity of self-destructive diseases along with current types of treatment and the range of recent ideas about future therapy. Great care is taken to make even the most complex notions of immunology and inflammation easily accessible and comprehensible for the general reader. This book is intended for the general public who are either themselves or have a family member suffering from one of these diseases. vii, 155 p : ill ; 24 cm. Includes index. Very nice copy, if with fade to the Dust Jacket. [ Location: BR1]. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. 8vo.

Smoke : a global history of smoking

Smoke : a global history of smoking

By Sander L. Gilman and Zhou Xun. [ Edited By ]

London: Reaktion Books, 2004. The First UK edition: Beautiful and informative book. The culture of smoking around the world is examined thoroughly in this illustrated volume. The contributors explore the history of smoking and its impact on health, gender, sexuality, art and literature. The study is not confined to tobacco and examines the use of other drugs like cocaine, hashish and opium. Human beings have always smoked, and they probably always will. Every culture in recorded history has smoked something, whether as a cure or for pleasure, whether as part of a ritual or as an aspect of popular culture. It is curious, then, that no history of smoking has been written based on the assumption that smoking - in all of its forms and products - is a cultural phenomenon common to all human societies. Smoke: A Global History of Smoking examines the culture of smoking in different traditions and locations around the world. From opium dens in Victorian England to tobacco in Edo period Japan, and from ganja and cocaine to Havana cigars, Smoke encompasses the subject as no book has before. Based in cultural history, it employs a large number of images as part of its evidence: around 300 illustrations document smoking and smokers of many substances including tobacco, scented cigarettes, marijuana, opium and cocaine. The various essays examine the changing role of smoking in high and popular culture, ranging from images used in advertising to the legal and moral critiques of smoking, and from opera to the internet. Smoke will appeal to all those who smoke, all those who used to smoke, and all those who have tried, and failed, to give it up. Review: This ... fascinating book has opened my eyes... -- Beryl Bainbridge The Times As with the best histories Smoke paints a vivid picture of times past into which smoking itself is just a lure. Glasgow Herald Smoke has many splendid and absorbing illustrations - pictures on nearly every page that range from smoking film stars, early advertising posters and ornate carved pipes, to beautiful full-colour reproductions of Western and Oriental art Sunday Telegraph There is ... an undeniable pleasure to be taken in Smoke's copious visual material -- Jonathan Meades London Evening Standard A remarkable collection of over 30 essays ... it is beautifully produced and profusely illustrated ... It is a real pleasure to recommend a book of true anthropological range and seriousness, conjuring, like the perfect smoke ring, the history of a universal human practice at a time when the issues raised ... are at the forefront of current world-wide debates on health policy and social safety. British Medical Journal. 408 p. : ill., ports. ; 25 cm. Includes bibliographical references (p. 365-393) and index. Sander L. Gilman is Distinguished Professor of the Liberal Arts and Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. A cultural and literary historian, he is the author or editor of over sixty books, including Health and Illness: Images of Difference (Reaktion Books, 1996), and Franz Kafka (Reaktion Books, 2005). Zhou Xun is ESRC Research Fellow in the History Department at SOAS, University of London, and the author of Chinese Perceptions of the 'Jews' and Judaism: A History of the Youtai (2000) [ Location : Br4/3 ].
