Each of the 4 first leaflets have 5 recipes printed on both sides suggested for food conservation and substitution in the war effort (WW I). These represent several different leaflets issued over the course of the war. Scarce set. Southern Workman August 1918: "[extract from the New York Age]...What is unanimously conceded to be the most interesting and instructive feature of the Food Conservation Exhibition now being held at the Grand Central Palace is conducted by Miss Portia Smiley a colored woman who is beginning to attract general attention as a demonstrator of cornmeal. While talking Miss Smiley backs up her argument by making many appetizing and wholesome dishes out of cornmeal. She is working under the auspices of the North Civic Federation Boston and has served as demonstrator for the Government in nearly every town in Massachusetts as well as in Providence RI and several towns in New Hampshire. While demonstrating recently in Manchester, Mass. she had an audience of 1000 in the afternoon and 800 in the evening Miss Smiley is an ex student of Hampton Institute having left the school in 1891. She graduated from Pratt Institute in 1901 and is the only colored normal graduate of the institution. She taught for a number years in Augusta Ga and last resigned as head of the Arts Crafts Department of the Industrial School for Girls to go North to work for the Government a demonstrator and now gives exhibitions on the Boston when in that city"..
