OVER PSEUDOLOODZOOMEN BIJ JAVANEN EN MADOEREEZEN ULTRAMELANINE EN MELANINE (Academisch Proefschrift ter Verkrijging van den Graad van Doctor in de Geneeskunde...25 Maart 1938)

By Breyer H.B.G. (Herman Bernhard Geertrudes).

Rotterdam: M. Wyt en Zonen, Pieter de Hoochweg III, 1938. Illustrated by color frontis, 21 figures (plates), two pull out charts. First edition. Stitched wraps. 8vo. pp. 92 , [4] pull out plates. Very Good. Spine archivally reinforced, old cover creases, owner stamp, contents pulled. "A number of Javanese printers have been examined by the author for signs of lead poisoning and in this book he gives an account of his findings and also discusses the problem of melanin and premelanin. He draws attention to the fact that lines on the gums resembling those seen in cases of lead poisoning are present in practically every Javanese and Madurese and are due to pigmentation and not to a metallic deposit. This was confirmed by sections and by chemical tests. The lines were mostly localized on the buccal and on the. labial side of the gums especially near the upper and the lower incisors but in some cases they extended as far as the molars. Some natives showed pigmentations of the mucous membrane of the cheek and of the soft palate. Pigmentations were never observed on the palatine and on the lingual side of the teeth or on the tongue and the author points out that lines found there are suggestive of a deposit of lead, bismuth or mercury. Of some interest were experiments performed by the author with melanin and with premelanin. H. Lomas Abstract"..

In a botched demonstration of nitrous oxide to MGH medical students in 1845, Wells was discredited and resorted to selling household items. When he returned from a visit with Morton in Paris he became addicted to chloroform and in a delerious state, doused two prositutes with sulfuric acid and was committed to the notorious Tombs Prison. Remorse with the reality of his act, he committed suicide with a razor from his shaving kit and a numbing dose of chloroform. Posthumously recognized by ADA in 1864 and AMA in 1870 as the discoverer of modern anesthesia. (Founded in 1928, YJBM is the oldest international student medical publication)..

About Good. Top cover missing, spine (paper and title) present but barely readable. He was one of the astronomers at Montpellier in 1761 on a 15th-19th Century compendium of voyages relating to transit of Venus observations. His interests were in multiple scientific fields through 1810 but his writings changed in 1814 to a literatry nature. Claude was brother of French poet Jean-Antoine Roucher 1745-94 whose demise via guillotine was subject of his 1834 play, La Mort Heroique de J.-A. Roucher...ou la Conspiration des prisonniers de Saint-Lazare, tragedie en 5 actes, en vers [The Heroic Death of J. A. Roucher...or Conspiracy Prisoners of St. Lazare, a tragedy in five acts, in verse]. Writings through 1835 were primarily plays. Scottish born William Maclure 1763-1840 social reformer (with Robert Owen) and advocate of the "Pestalozzi" school system was partner in a British law firm. His 1803 trip to France as a commisioner to settle claims on French government and subsequent travels in Europe shifted his interests to geology. On his return in 1807 [possibly with this title in hand], on his own accord, traveled the country and produced the first US geological map, presenting the results to the American Philosophical Society in the transactions 1809, Volume IV..
