The Development of the Atomic Theory: (I) Berthollet's Doctrine of Variable Proportions. Contained in Memoirs and Proceedings of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society (1909-1910), Volume 54, Issue 2 pages 1-16.

By Meldrum, Andrew Norman

Manchester, 1910. -----Two questions in science, between the years 1800 and 1810, were the theory of mixed gases and the fixed or variable composition of chemical substances. Berthollet and Dalton were leaders of thought on opposite sides. Dalton's ideas were ultimately triumphant but yet never received full attention. This paper outlines how the doctrine of constant proportions developed. -----The Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society was founded in 1781 and is considered one of England's oldest continuing society. Boldly provinicial, utilitarian, and technological in its orientation, it nourished creative science of the highest caliber. The society played a critical role in the development of such scientists as John Dalton (see DSB). ----- Monochrome illustrations. ( Also contains Note on Radio-active Recoil by Sidney Russ. With 3 in-text figures. Already having shown that when Radium Emanation is condensed at the bottom of a tube, the space above it evacuated, particles of the Active Deposit are radiated up the tube.
