Untitled image of a women with Lyre.

By MYTHOLOGY)

Paris.. No date. Ca. late 1700s.. Engraving, image 13 1/4 x 11 1/4 inches, tipped onto paper support with decorative gouache border, 23 3/4 x 18 inches. This display treatment is evidently old, if not contemporary with the print (the support sheet was washed with green paint (gouache) and the decorative panel and lines applied by hand). The print has been trimmed to just outside the image; the printed image is in very good clean condition. A richly engraved composition depicting a woman holding a lyre. An excellent example of the fine work done by "reproductive" printmakers of the 18th century in popularising artworks (see Susan Lambert's book on this topic "The Image Multiplied"). .

Motion Picture Magazine.

By VINTAGE FILM "FAN" MAGAZINE)

Brooklyn, New York.: Motion Picture Magazine.. 02- 1915. Illustrated magazine, 9 3/8 x 6 3/8 inches, 184 pp, covering numerous aspects of the nascent film industry including: the story-lines of current films (with illustrations); capsule biographies of motion picture stars; articles dealing with "behind the scenes" aspects of film-making ("the war in Europe is often filmed on Long Island"); longer profiles of actors and the studios they work for; "Green Room Jottings" (gossip); brief interviews revealing "How I became a Photoplayer"; cartoons and caricatures; and much more. Extensive advertising, including ads aimed at those hoping for careers in motion pictures ("Learn Photoplay Acting," "The Art of Selling a Photoplay," etc.) Abrasions along spine edge of front cover. The bottom of page 145/6 has been cleanly cut away, while the remaining top advertises "A Dollar Photograph of Mary Pickford Almost Free"; presumably the absent bit had to do with the Dollar Photo offer. Color cover of magazine features a profile photo-portrait of Ethel Clayton. The "Gallery of Picture Players" at the magazine's front features 16 full-page portraits of actors, among them Constance Talmadge and Lillian Russell. The magazine's department titled "Chats with the Players" features an interview with "Francis X. Bushman of the Essanay Company" and an interview with "Lottie Pickford of the Famous Players" (Mary Pickford's sister). Other articles include "Where to Get Photoplay Plots" and "The Drama in Pictures" by Maud Fealy. The magazine offers wide-ranging coverage of the film industry, still centered heavily in New York City. Contents in very good condition, with damage noted. An uncommon periodical. .
