Fables from Aesop and Others.

By AESOP) Johnston, Arnrid (illus).

London.: Transatlantic Arts.. 1944.. Full page color lithographic illustrations, black and white in-text illustrations, 47pp, 10 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches, pictorial paper covered boards with blue cloth spine (hardbound). Good condition; short closed tear at top of spine, general light wear to extremities, previous owner's name in ink on front endpaper with inscription dated 1945, foxing to endpapers, illustrations clean and bright. A most attractive book with lithographic illustrations by Arnrid Johnston accompanying well-known, and not so well-known, fables, including The Frogs who Wanted a King: The Frogs lived among the lakes and ponds. They got tired of doing just whatever they pleased, and one day asked Jupiter to send them a King. Jupiter did not take the request very seriously, so, just for a joke, he threw down a long saying, "There is a King for you." The log fell into the lake with a great splash which frightened the Frogs, and they watched their King in fear and trembling. At last one brave Frog jumped on to the shoulder of the Monarch; soon others followed, and they played games on his back. They were soon bored by the dullness of their King and asked Jupiter for another. This time he sent a Stork, who tossed them about and gobbled themup without mercy. The Frogs were more discontented than ever, and begged Jupiter to restore them to their former state. But Jupiter said, "I sent you a king who did you no harm, and he did not please you; now you must make the best of the one you have, for fear I send a worse one." .

Our Baby. Cover title: Our Baby's Book.

By BABY GIFT BOOK) Gleason, Ray (illus).

No publisher.. No date. Ca. late 1930s?. Baby "Record" book in glassine wraps, 9 x 7 inches, 28 pp. Pages begin with "The Arrival" (date and time) and progress through "First Photograph," "Letters and Telegrams, "The Christening" and on to 9 pages of "Baby’s First..." as in "tooth," "steps," etc. Book was initially published with pink-tone covers, but time has faded the front cover to near white, while a soft pink remains on the rear cover. The glassine protective wrap suffers from tears and modest paper loss, but it has done the job of protecting, over the decades. The book has been dated "late 30s," based on the illustration of Mother’s dress, as well as Gleason’s work as an illustrator undertaken in the late 1930s. An uncommon book; overall very good clean condition-certainly an engaging gift. .
