Funny Animals; A Picture Book for the Nursery.

By CATS - VICTORIAN ENGLAND) Ballantyne, R. M. "Comus" (illus).

London, England.: T. Nelson and Sons.. 1867.. Color illustrations throughout, unpaginated (72 pp., most printed on one side only), approximately 10 ¾ x 7 inches; cloth-covered boards with pictorial gilt-embossed front cover design. Text on title page states "Thirty-Two Pages of Illustrations, Printed in Oil Colours." Chips and loss of fabric to spine; discoloration (evidently sun-bleaching) to large area of front cover. Pencil notations on front free edge page. Contents in good condition. An engaging early children’s book with mechanically produced color illustrations. A wonderful Victorian, collection of four different stories, three relating to cats: "The Kitten Cousins," "Mister Fox," "Chit Chat by a Motherly Cat," and "Story of a Robber Kitten." "Chit Chat by a Motherly Cat" tells it all, each sentiment with an appropriate illustration of a somewhat primitive but strangely endearing nature: "Our Love"; "Our Mirth"; "Our Grief"; "Our Woe"; "Our Rest"; "Our Fear"; "Our Fright"; "Our Way." In the book "Milestones in Colour Printing" author Bamber Gascoigne credits R. M. Ballantyne (using the pseudonym "Comus") with illustrations for "The Robber Kitten" published by Nelson in 1858. Elsewhere "Comus" is credited with the illustrations for "Mr. Fox." Presumably Ballantyne was the illustrator for all four of the "Funny Animals" stories. .
