Billy is introduced to naval vessels large and small (and a few aeroplanes) via Uncle Dick's solo talkathon. An uncommon WWI era illustrated booklet for youngsters; WorldCat lists only one library holding. .

Akron, Ohio.: Saalfield Publishing Company.. First Edition.. 1931.. Beautifully illustrated children's book 12 x 10 inches; 60 pp; with 12 color illustrations by Fern Bisel Peat. Dust jacket in good minus condition (short tape-repaired tears at top and bottom of front cover, bottom of rear cover, and at top of spine, all mended on verso of cover). Front and rear boards clean and bright with shelf wear along bottom edge and light abrasion along top edge of rear cover. Original owner's bookplate on verso of front cover and inscription on front free end paper (“Christmas present 1934” etc.) Very good clean condition, with issues noted. This first edition contains all 12 of Fern Bisel Peat's color illustrations for the 11 stories featured in the book. (The 1936 edition featured just six illustrations.) The paper wraps have preserved an "as new" look to the front and rear covers despite wear to the edges. .

This book was obviously read and reread, and not surprisingly. The illustrations are wonderful -- very colorful (process seems to be a kind of chromolithography). The participants are portrayed as wooden toys on stands. Naturally John learns the error of his ways. .
