London.: Illustrated London News.. 06-20- 1953.. Single issue, Saturday June 20, 1953 of the magazine, 14 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches, illustrated throughout in color and black and white. The centrefold illustrated foldout has come loose from the rusted staple binding but remains in excellent clean condition with no faults evident. Overall very good condition. The centrefold is a double sided illustrated fold-out sheet size 14 1/2 x 20 inches, with, on one side, a four-panel black and white illustration of " 'The Queen's Ships' - The Royal Navy of today displayed in a single panorama" and on the verso two illustrations, each two panels, of a cut-away view of "a typical British aircraft carrier" and "Some present-day vessels typical of those...being developed to meet the conditions of modern warfare." All of these detailed and fascinating illustrations are by G. H. Davis. The color cover illustration is on "The 'Golden Hind' - Symbol of a Golden Age." Numerous additional illustrated articles with particular focus given to British and Commonwealth warships as well as those of foreign navies, with additional cut-away illustrations by G. H. Davis. An exceptional publication of particular interest to British naval enthusiasts with documentation of the mid-twentieth century fleet. Overall very good clean condition. .

Catalog focuses on the exhibit featuring the work of sculptor Pilkington Jackson, the creator of statuettes depicting evolving Scottish Regimental Dress over several centuries. Three tipped-in color illustrations provide examples of Jackson’s craft. A "Key" at the center of the catalog provides a Regimental Chronology and further details regarding the exhibit: "The statuettes are set out in groups covering periods of years, and the dates of each period are on the wall of the gallery opposite the appropriate group. Within their groups the statuettes are displayed for effect, and are not in strict chronological order. Each statuette is labeled and self-explanatory." The cover of the booklet indicates the statuettes cover the period 1633 to 1918. No WorldCat listing for the catalog. A further note: "Visitors are earnestly requested not to touch the exhibits." .

TWO ISSUES of the magazine, April 29, 1899 and May 20, 1899, black and white illustrations and ads, 16 pages each, 16 x 11 1/4 inches, disbound from volume. April edition has two creases at lower right corner, still overall very good condition. April 29 issue has four illustrations on the front page (Rolling the Barrrels, Straightening the Barrels etc.) with a 1 1/4 page article inside with further illustrations. May 20 issue has illustrations on the front cover and with the 1 1/2 page article inside. These two articles cover the "Water Shops of the Springfield Armory where the gun barrels are rolled, bored, turned, rifled, and tested, ready for asembling in the finished weapon...[and] the Hill shops, where the complicated parts which go to make up the breech mechanism...are machined and finished and where the wooden stocks are made and the whole gun is assembled..." The April issue also includes an article and two photo-illustrations of the Sutro Baths of San Francisco with detailed information on their structure. .

Two paperback orientation booklets provided to servicemen stationed in Europe. "Short Guide to Great Britain" 5 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches; 38 pp. plus 2 page centerfold map of Great Britain. "Welcome to the Riviera" 6 1/4 x 4 inches, 22 pp. plus folded map of Nice at rear. Rear covers of both booklets show black paper residue; clearly, these two items were once carefully preserved in a scrapbook. Overall good condition, save for back cover damage. "Guide to Great Britain" cautions: "Remember...Britain may look a little shop-worn and grimy to you The British people are anxious to have you know that you are not seeing their country at its best. There's been a war on since 1939." The French guidebook observes "With the arrival of American troops on the 28th of August, 1944, the people of Nice were free again and began to rediscover happiness and gaiety" while also requesting that military personnel "restrain from any action of a destructive nature" during their time in Nice or adjacent communities (Cannes, Antibes, Grasse). The two booklets reflect the need to provide guidance for US military personnel for whom Europe is a new and novel experience. .

Front and rear cover separated at spine. Lithographed image on cover in very good condition. An astonishing color lithographed cover by A. Hoen & Co. depicting the disjunction between 19th century and 20th century warfare. On the ground is an horrific battle with horse-drawn artillery centrally featured. In the background are steel-clad fortifications discharging cannons, while in the air a biplane and dirigible are firing at troops on the ground. Framing the image of mayhem are the emblems of France Germany Belgium, Austria-Hungary, Japan, Turkey, Great Britain and Russia... A notice in the margin states "Companion Piece to the Celebrated Napoleon's Last Charge Descriptive March." An exceptional piece of military/musical ephemera in very good condition with issues noted. .

A detailed and finely engraved image of military weaponry. Plate 2 from Diderot's "Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une Société de Gens de lettres", published between 1751 and 1772. .
