1939.. Pamphlet 9 x 4 1/2 inches unfolding to color pictorial map 17 x 25 1/2 inches, 3 red black and white maps on other side. Very good condition. This is a highly decorative large color pictorial map showing a span of the lower part of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, from Newport to Martha's Vineyard and part of Cape Cod. Decorative features include a compass rose, all kinds of ships in the sea, lots of vignettes of historic houses and monuments. An attractive map to frame with lots of informative detail. On the verso is another pictorial map (12 x 17 inches) "Newport's Famous Ten Mile Drive Along the Ocean Front showing the locations of the beautiful summer residences of many prominent people" with vignette illustrations depicting the houses and naming the owners. A fascinating bit of local history. Two other smaller maps show roads of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island and a map of the area around the Mount Hope Bridge. .

Horizontal fold to each issue. One issue staple bound; one issue with sewn string binding. Most issues have ink stamp of a San Francisco news dealer at top or elsewhere on front page. Covers in fair condition, interiors fair to good: see below. February 3 issue: Sleighing Scene on cover; also a large view of State Street Boston (1855). March 10 issue: Four views on two pages of an American Packet Ship making the Liverpool to Boston crossing (soiling to first page; abraded free edge and one inch tear at centerfold to one page featuring two packet ship views). March 24 issue: Half page view of the city of Charleston and a two page spread featuring 10 views to illustrate the article "Scenery in Western Massachusetts." (1 ¼ inch tear at free edge where newspaper was folded.) April 21 issue: Large view depicting "New York in 1855." Smaller (1/3 page) "View of Burlington, Iowa" and two views on one page illustrating "Loading Cotton on the Alabama River." Single issue of the illustrated newspaper Ballou's Pictorial ; 15 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches; pp. 161-176 (16 pp); never bound in a volume; chipping to spine and light abrasion along free edge. First page pays homage to "The State of Iowa," with Native Americans and frontiersmen dominating the image. Two centerfold pages are devoted to Amherst College, and feature three large wood engravings: "Mount Holyoke, from Amherst," "New Library at Amherst College," "Colleges and Observatory at Amherst," with copious text devoted to the Massachusetts college situated "nearly at her geographical heart." Good condition, with very light soiling to front cover, horizontal fold as is usually the case with this weekly, plus ink stamp of a San Francisco news dealer to top free edge of front page. A most interesting issue of the newspaper, which observes: "No university can surpass the one at Amherst in facilities for studying natural history, while it is behind none in its opportunities for classical, mathematical, and philosophical education." .

Twenty-four page narrative of winter hardships suffered in the Vermont wilderness as recorded by a 30 year old settler in 1789, with Introduction by the publisher. This Narrative is followed by a one page poem (author unknown) titled "Joy and Trouble." Booklet 7 ½ x 5 inches; Introduction I-V and 24 numbered pages; stitched binding. Text printed on Strathmore paper. Frontispiece titled "A Home in the Wilderness." Text on verso of title page states: "Edition of ninety-five copies, of which thirty are on large paper and thirteen on Whatman's drawing paper"; this text followed by "No.____" (on this copy left blank). Exceptionally good condition, covers and contents clean and bright. Full title, as reproduced in the booklet, is "A Narrative of the Sufferings of Seth Hubbell & Family, in his Beginning A Settlement in the Town of Wolcott, in the State of Vermont. Danville, Vt.... 1824." Hatch states the text was found "years ago" on the floor of "a dingy garret of an isolated farmhouse." In interesting ephemeral item in excellent condition. .
