Flora's Dictionary

By Wirt, Mrs. E. W.

Baltimore: Fielding Lucas, Jr., 1837. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto. 87 pages with numerous blank multi-colored inserts. The binding measures 10 1/4 inches tall by 8 1/4 inches wide. Hardcover bound in quarter red leather with printed paper-covered boards. The binding is rubbed and bumped but sound. Scuffing to the leather and to the printed boards. There is some superficial damping to the front cover and to the edges in a couple of places in the text block. All edges gilt. Elaborate gilt stamping to the spine. Silk moire endpapers show some staining and edge chipping. An early signature on the second front flyleaf reads, "Mrs. C. M. M. Dameron." The title page is heavily foxed. There is some damping at the fore edge and lower corner of the page and there is a large chip at the bottom edge near the gutter, which is also on the next (Preface) page, not affecting text. (This appears to be where iron gall ink had spilled, causing the area to be browned and brittle before chipping away. There is a little staining to the third leaf). There is a 4 inch tear on the leaf for pages 83/84 running from the fore edge into the text. This section is the "Explanation of Botanical Terms Used in Flora's Dictionary." Certainly the text is still legible. Some of these were issued with up to 58 color plates, and some, it seems were not. This copy does not have color plates, and there is no evidence that any plates were removed (such as off-setting or trimmed tabs in the gutters). It does have a number of blank pages in various colors which may have been intended for floral pastedowns or notations. One of the pages shows some light pencil writing in an early hand. Still a charming book. The entries list the flowers and their scientific names, and to the side there are several lines of poetry from various sources inspired by the flower mentioned.
