The Confederate's Daughter; Or the Tyrant of New Orleans. [Benjamin Butler] Beautifully Illustrated.

By Anonymous

London: J. W. Allen & Co.. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Good. Octavo. 237 pages. [Fiction] Hardcover bound in original 3/4 brown calf and brown and green marbled paper-covered boards. The binding is rubbed and worn but sound. Secure hinges. There is some abrasion to the spine ends, and the corners are bumped. Lacks the front flyleaf; the first page is the title page. The text block is generally sound, but one of the gatherings near the front is slightly sprung. There is a 1977 ink inscription on the front pastedown noting where the book was purchased (at an antique shop) in N. Yorkshire, England. Another pencil notation above this has been crudely erased. The text is toned and shows some occasional spotting or staining. Printed in double columns per page. There is no author to this work and no printing date. We estimate the publication date to be in the 1860s or 1870s due to the style of printing and illustrations. Contains 29 half-page woodcut engravings. A scarce volume. Currently we have been able to locate only one copy on Worldcat. Worldcat notes another book entitled "The Tyrant of New Orleans. A Drama," (just 46 pages) published in Atlanta, 1873, but we do not know if that title has any relation to this one. This is a work of fiction. The "Tyrant" is General Benjamin Butler. Butler commanded the force that captured New Orleans in 1862. His treatment of women was notorious as shown in Butler's General Order No. 28. If any woman spoke against, insulted, or disrespected an officer or soldier of the United States, she would be regarded as a prostitute. This allowed Union soldier to do as they pleased and created a national sensation and controversy.
