There is pencil scribbling on the title page which appears to be dated 1874, although the book is dated 1888. Text shows some foxing.

Harrisburg [Pennsylvania]: Gedruckt und zu haben bey C. Gleim, 1814. Hardcover. Very Good. 16mo. iii, 125 pages. A small, pocket-sized book. The binding measures 5 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in early quarter leather with green and tan marbled paper-covered boards. The binding is rubbed and worn but sound. The leather spine is solid. Rubbing along the edges of the binding, and the corners are bumped and worn to the boards beneath. Hinges secure. Complete with 2 front and 2 rear flyleaves. The text is tone and has occasional foxing or staining but overall is quite acceptable. Text is in German. This work does NOT contain scored music. A rough translation of the title is, "Spiritual Songs: With an Appendix, Consisting of Spiritual and Comforting Songs, by Various Poets." A nice early 19th Century Harrisburg, Pennsylvania imprint.

Hardcover bound in mid-19th century full dark brown leather with elaborate cover designs embossed in blind and in gilt. Gilt rolls along the perimeters of the front and rear boards and with elaborate gilt stamping on the spine. All edges gilt. The center field on the front cover is gilt-stamped, "H. Junker von Thalieschweiler / 1853." Yellow endpapers. There are some family genealogy notations on the rear pastedown (in German) from the 1850s to the 1860s. Title page is browned and has some water spotting. Text is toned and occasionally foxed or spotted but is quite sound. This volume contains mostly text, although there are occasional score with simple notations. There is a Register of songs at the rear. An attractive and serviceable copy. A small book measuring 4 3/4 inches tall by just over 3 inches wide. Bound in full flexible black leather. The binding is rather rubbed and is worn but sound. Scuffs and abrasions about the edges. All edges gilt, but the gilt is scuffed and fading. A sturdy binding. The text is toned, and a number of pages are dog-eared. The word "Hymnal" is gilt-stamped on the spine as well as on the back cover. When this was first issued, it was likely paired with a Book of Common Prayer which is not present.

There is moderate wear to the binding, which is bumped at the corners and beginning to fray. There is some foxing to the end papers and title page. The preface through page 20 is detached in a single segment from the seam. Seam is broken and delicate at other places, several other segments of pages are loose. Inscription by the previous owner on the front end paper dated 1971. There is no single author, but the Chairman of the Joint Hymnal Committee was Vernon H. Neufeld, who also wrote the Preface.

EX-LIBRARY copy, with library stamp on title page. 'Discard' stamp inside rear cover along with a pencilled notation. Inside rear cover shows paper residue from where a card pocket or other lending library paper was glued. Text is foxed but sound.
