About an inch of the title page is partly stuck to the inside of the front cover near the gutter, running the length of the gutter. This just barely touches some of the initial left-hand letters on the title. The first and last leaves shows some browning or foxing, due to the brown paper wrapping, but the text is clean. Pages 88-89 are tanned from an advertising slip laid in loosely. Text is in Greek and Latin.

The front pastedown has a nice mid-20th century Greek bookplate featuring a stag. A sound copy with clean text. (There are a couple of closed repaired tears on the final leaf: the Table des Matieres). Contains several full-page sepia illustrations from photos. Herode Atticus (A.D. 101-177) was a wealthy Greek aristocrat and sophist who served as a Roman Senator. He was a patron of the arts and letters. A wealthy benefactor, he also funded several large building projects in Greece and Asia Minor, including theaters, stadiums and aqueducts.
