A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Some spotting to the outside edges of the text block, but the text is generally quite clean. There a small ink-stamp ownership mark on the front flyleaf by a 20th century owner. An early inscription on the second front flyleaf reads, "Samuel Rowe / 1858" and then in another hand in pencil, "to C. A. Brown." A sound little book with nice gilt designs on the spine.

Toning inside front and rear covers. Inscription and prior owner's name on front flyleaf, which is detached and laid in loosely. Title page and preface page have dark mark at lower edge. Toning on pages 306-307 where a ribbon had been placed between the pages. Foxing on some pages. Laid in loosely is an old Victorian-era calling card showing a dove on a spray of flowers and with the name "R. R. Berry.

Foot of the spine is bumped and abraded. Various early and later owners' notations on the endpapers. The text block is sound, and the text shows some foxing. Horace Bushnell (1802-1876) was a Congregational minister and theologian, originally from Connecticut. In the 1850s he moved to California for his health. This book was considered a bit heretical in its views towards the Trinity. He noted that the Godhead was "instrumentally three.
