Hardcover bound in original dark brown publisher's cloth with cover designs embossed in blind and with spine designs in gilt. Light to moderate wear to the binding. The corners are a little bumped. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Some spotting to the outside edges of the text block, but the text is generally quite clean. There a small ink-stamp ownership mark on the front flyleaf by a 20th century owner. An early inscription on the second front flyleaf reads, "Samuel Rowe / 1858" and then in another hand in pencil, "to C. A. Brown." A sound little book with nice gilt designs on the spine.

Soft cover bound in stitched wrappers. No outside covers; the cover page is the title page. Moderate wear to the binding. There are a couple of nicks or holes in the title page or along the edges. The binding is sound, and the text is clean. No owner's markings. A scarce item involving a theological dispute between two ministers in Raleigh, North Carolina on the issue of Infant Baptism. Richard Sharp Mason (1795-1874) was an Episcopal clergyman and educator. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1812 and became rector of Christ Church in New Bern in 1818. He became a priest in Edenton in 1820. He served in Fayetteville, North Carolina and in Pennsylvania, New York, and then by 1840 he was back in North Carolina, serving in Raleigh from 1840 for the rest of his life. At this time there was a great controversy in North Carolina over Infant Baptism. He wrote this view at the end of his life, and his son had it published the year of his death. Rare. Housed in a removable mylar sleeve backed in board for protection, so this can be safely shelved with the rest of your books.

Some dampstain wrinkling on front cover. Chipping and fraying of headcap/foot of spine, with a .5 inch tear at upper portion of rear hinge. Front inner hinge cracking with the muslin beneath exposed. Toning inside front and rear covers. Inscription and prior owner's name on front flyleaf, which is detached and laid in loosely. Title page and preface page have dark mark at lower edge. Toning on pages 306-307 where a ribbon had been placed between the pages. Foxing on some pages. Laid in loosely is an old Victorian-era calling card showing a dove on a spray of flowers and with the name "R. R. Berry.

The binding is worn but sound. There is some splitting in the cloth at the front hinge near the headcap as well as the rear hinge at the headcap. Headcap torn and pulled. Foot of the spine is bumped and abraded. Various early and later owners' notations on the endpapers. The text block is sound, and the text shows some foxing. Horace Bushnell (1802-1876) was a Congregational minister and theologian, originally from Connecticut. In the 1850s he moved to California for his health. This book was considered a bit heretical in its views towards the Trinity. He noted that the Godhead was "instrumentally three.
