He was the editor of the Charlotte Observer from 1912 to 1916 and was the editor of the Raleigh Times 1918-1926. In 1926 he returned to his home of Chapel Hill and succeeded Gerald W. Johnson as a professor of Journalism. He became the first Dean of the School of Journalism when it was created.
