Moby Dick or the Whale. [THREE VOLUME SET IN ALUMINUM SLIPCASE/ LAKESIDE PRESS / LIMITED TO 1000 COPIES]

By Melville, Herman

Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Rockwell Kent. Large Quartos. Three Volume Set in Original Aluminum Slipcase; lacks the glassine wrappers. Hardbacks bound in black cloth with beveled edges and with cover designs in silver. The bindings show some rubbing and wear about the edges. The feet of the spines are rubbed, and the cloth is frayed with some chipping at the feet of the spines on Volumes I & II. The spines are very faintly faded. There is rubbing to the front cover of Volume I. There is a small nick or spot of abrasion on the very bottom edge of the rear board of Volume I. The inner hinges are secure, and the text is mostly clean. There is a brown damp spot in the gutter of Volume III near the foot (goes about 5/8 of an inch on either side of the gutter). This is evident on the endpapers and retreats after each page, nearly vanishing around page 12/13. Partly unopened. One of the most important American illustrated works of the early 20th century. Rockwell Kent's woodcut illustrations are bold and perfect for the work. The raised whale tails on the spines are reminiscent of the designs to Melville's original Triple Decker. This first illustrated edition was limited to 1000 sets, and sets are often found lacking the aluminum slipcase. Scarce.
