A specially bound copy of the script for the 1978 film The Children of Sanchez, produced, co-written, and directed by Hall Bartlett. Inside the front cover a small bookbinderÂ’s label shows that the book was bound by Ronnie Gousman in Hollywood. Save for one tiny spot of wear on the back side of the spine, essentially as new. Hall Bartlett (1922–1993) wrote, directed, and produced dozens of films, as well as writing two novels and serving as a founder and board member of numerous Los Angeles cultural organizations. His films received ten Best Picture and Best Director awards at various international film festivals, seventeen Academy Award nominations, eight Hollywood Foreign Press Golden Globe Awards, and more than seventy-five national and international awards from publications and organizations. Light wear to extremities, and scattered faint marks to cloth; light soiling to cover label, otherwise intact and bright; darkening and edge-chipping to spine label, still quite legible. Edited by Chris Kraus; expanded and with an introduction by Robert Dewhurst; afterword by Rachel Kushner. Essays by poet, translator, and polymath David Rattray. Initially best known for his translations of Antonin Artaud, Rattray has developed a steadily growing audience for his remarkable poems (collected in the book Opening the Eyelid), essays, and miscellaneous translations from myriad languages since his untimely death in 1993. First published in 1992, and now back in print in a greatly expanded edition (almost a hundred pages of new material), and with a marvelous biographical introduction by Robert Dewhurst.

Still an essentially as-new set, otherwise fine and unopened.

Uncorrected galleys for this early young adult title, published the same year as the authorÂ’s Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. The book is set on a sharecropper plantation much like the one where Gaines was born. Slight sunning to edges of card covers, otherwise a very good copy; laid into a very good example of the dust-jacket, with some rubbing and a date in orange grease-pencil on the front flap (very likely the date of receipt for review). An uncommon title, in a very scarce advance state.

This copy from the library of Joseph Gold, with bookseller Peter HowardÂ’s pencil notation to that effect on the half-title.

This volume includes an extensive anthology of prose poetry edited by Charles Henri Ford, with forty-four contributors; a short novel by Gide, previously unpublished in English (Le Voyage d'Urien); an excerpt from Louis Zukofsky's Bottom: On Shakespeare; work by Edward Dahlberg, Irving Layton, Cavafy, Tennessee Williams, and much more. Slight tanning to pages and light bumps and wear to extremities; a very good copy in a good dustjacket worn at the extremities, with small losses at crown and foot of darkened and lightly stained spine. 8vo.
