Description:
Los Angeles: Hall Bartlett Films, n.d. (1977). First printing. 195 pp., 8.5 x 11 inches. A specially bound copy of the script for the 1978 film The Children of Sanchez, produced, co-written, and directed by Hall Bartlett. Inside the front cover a small bookbinderÂ’s label shows that the book was bound by Ronnie Gousman in Hollywood. Save for one tiny spot of wear on the back side of the spine, essentially as new. Hall Bartlett (1922–1993) wrote, directed, and produced dozens of films, as well as writing two novels and serving as a founder and board member of numerous Los Angeles cultural organizations. His films received ten Best Picture and Best Director awards at various international film festivals, seventeen Academy Award nominations, eight Hollywood Foreign Press Golden Globe Awards, and more than seventy-five national and international awards from publications and organizations. Bartlett is perhaps most famous for his adaptation of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, but a dedication to exploring…

Boston: John W. Luce & Co., 1905. First printing. 107 pp., 5.25 x 7.75 inches. Cloth over boards, with printed cover and spine labels. Light wear to extremities, and scattered faint marks to cloth; light soiling to cover label, otherwise intact and bright; darkening and edge-chipping to spine label, still quite legible. Internally very good, save for a tape repair to one page (see images). Inscribed by the author on the front free endsheet, “For Carey McWilliams, with all good wishes . . . Los Angeles Oct 27 Â’26”. Crusading author, journalist, editor, and activist Carey McWilliams (1905-1980), as a teenager read H. L. Mencken and F. Scott Fitzgerald, and organized his life according to the Jazz Age dictates as he understood them: “I was sixteen when I enrolled at the University of Denver. By that time I was very much interested in books and had scribbled notes for a kind of a novel about that part of the West. Of course I never wrote it. But I was interested in writing and books. And I read…

Description:
New York: Dial Press, 1971. First printing. 134 pp., 5.5 x 8.75 inches. Perfect-bound in printed card covers, with printed dust-jacket. Drawings by Don Bolognese. Uncorrected galleys for this early young adult title, published the same year as the authorÂ’s Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. The book is set on a sharecropper plantation much like the one where Gaines was born. Slight sunning to edges of card covers, otherwise a very good copy; laid into a very good example of the dust-jacket, with some rubbing and a date in orange grease-pencil on the front flap (very likely the date of receipt for review). An uncommon title, in a very scarce advance state.
