"The within pages, originally written for Valentine's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York" have been brought together, and fifty copies printed for the use of friends of the writers.". This is what is written on the back of the title page. This is copy numbered 10. The unique aspect of this book is that one of the authors, Henry B. Dawson, signed that page and numbered the edition - plus on the facing page he wrote "The New Jersey Historical Society with the respects of Henry B. Dawson" - in beautiful 19th century script. Dawson was according to my research on the internet an immigrant from England who fell in love with american histroy. He became a newspaper editor and journalist but was known in the end as an historian. He wrote Battles of the United States by Sea and Land and an edition of the Federalist creating a controversy with James A. Hamilton and John Jay.
