Mary Howitt (1799-1888) Poet, writer, journalist, translator, editor of numerous books. Wife of William, "The Howitts had been all their lives great wanderers; they would journey for weeks or months at a time, chiefly on foot, through England, Wales, or Scotland, and the Continent, and knew intimately and minutely every place they wrote about. Their literary industry was marvellous, as is shown by appended list of books. Mary Howitt's name was attached, either as author, editor, or translator, to 110 works." (Evelyn Noble Armitage) A beautifully written vivid literary autobiography.

Very occasional spotting. A lovely volume.
Richard Tully was the British Consul at Tripoli from 1783 to 1793, and, according to the preface, these letters were written by his sister; and attributed to his sister-in-law in the second and third editions. The author's identity has always been a mystery: there is no record of a sister, nor of another female family member residing in Tripoli apart from Mr Tully's wife and two daughters. The final entry is dated April 30, 1795, Gibraltar. It reads: "Since you must have had my letters with the journal of Tripoli". A near fine copy with no inscriptions. Freya Stark (1893-1993) a fearless and indomitable traveller. Her unique collection of photographs range from North Africa to the Levant, South Arabia to Turkey, Persia, Soviet Central Asia, China, the Alps, Himalayas, the gorges of the Tigris, the arid wastes of Central Asia and the lush palm groves of the Wadi Hadhramout, the wilds of Kurdistan. She sought hospitality among Shamar Bedouin, Kashgar herdsmen, Kurdish camel-herders and yurt-dwelling Turkomans. Many of her photographs evoke a world now inaccessible. Her godson Malise Ruthven adds to her writings with a short biography.
