Typed and handwritten signed letter to "My dear Watson" dated 5th January 1934. 1pp. 20cm x 25cm. King's College Zoological Department headed watermarked notepaper. The advance copy of the book mentioned is Huxley's "Elements of Experimental Embryology" co-written with Gavin de Beer. "I have got a German refugee working here who is getting interesting results with Sabella". The German refugee was Fabius Gross (1906 – 1950) Hitler's Black Book entry: "Since 1934 – Researcher at King's College, London University. Speciality – genetics; experimental cytology; protozoology; experimental zoology." Gross and Huxley published 'Regeneration and reorganisation in Sabella' in 1935. The letter also mentions work with Alexander Wolsky and C. J. Bond.

Corners rubbed and slightly bumped. John George Adami (1862 - 1926) FRS, FRSE, CBE, LL.D., "qualified in medicine at Manchester and in 1892 was appointed professor of pathology at McGill University. At the invitation of the Royal College of Physicians (in London) he delivered the Croonian Lectures in 1917. He chose the title 'Adaptation and disease; the contribution of medical research to the study of evolution'. Adami believed that medical work had brought to light important facts about heredity that had not been communicated adequately to biological scientists. He used the lectures to describe this work, placing particular emphasis on his contention that acquired characters are inherited." M. Buttolph Journal of Medical Biography 2010.

Paper fault to lower margin of 175/6, not affecting text. A crisp and handsome copy. First and only edition of this important book by Dolomieu (1750-1801) who gave his name to the Dolomites. The outline maps were not bound into this copy and are loosely inserted in facsimile.

The comprehensive introduction which covers the Minorquines, festivals, witchcraft and evil, climate, agriculture, wine, minerals, the natural history of the island, lists of plants and animals, together with the native names of several species, is followed by seven chapters on epidemical diseases, plus weather and Meteorological tables.

Signature of Gayet de Sansale dated 1758 to ffep verso. A nice copy in contemporary binding, with fine contemporary provenance. Thoroughly revised, corrected and extended by Monceau in this second edition, in line with further researches, published a year after the first, with additional folding plate.

This edition has an additional plate to the 1790 edition, plus additional material. The plates are each dated September 1, 1805. Significant to the library of the vine. A handsome volume.

Later utilitarian quarter calf, spine in six compartments with raised bands with uneven black rules, gilt lettering, sl. rubbed to head and foot; slightly marked cloth boards. All edges speckled. Apart from a little light sporadic foxing a nice crisp clean copy, firmly bound. Priced to accommodate cost of rebacking which would greatly enhance the volume.

Corners bumped and joints cracked, but firm. Title excised to upper margin, no loss of text. 17pp subscriber list including J Priestley, Wm Cullen and William Paley, with unnumbered page of subscribers not present in all copies. Toned throughout, with some spotting. Small ink stain to edges. Signature to title page. Barely legible note dated 1832, with the name Matthias Ferguson … "come Holy Spirit" loosely inserted: Ferguson marked neatly with pencil in subscribers list.

Miln's reconciliation of recent geological discoveries and scripture: the chapter "To build an Ark" carefully evaluates the practicalities. Paley's own work was published 8 years later.
