"With Earthly Measures, Edward Hirsch breaks through the ring of fire and captures his Muse. The voice is now uncannily his own; uncanny because we believe we have heard it before, yet the accents are unearthly and utterly fresh. Like his poem on Art Pepper, this voice also hears the chords of Stevens and Celan, but knows that 'play solo means going on alone, improvising.'" -Harold Bloom.

Description:
NY: Knopf, 1996. Book. As New. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. As up-to-date as the current cosmography, as steeped in tradition as ancient agriculture, George Bradley's The Fire Fetched Down overflows with energy, humor, and intellectual curiosity. Readers will find the aesthetic detachment and technical proficiency they have come to expect of Bradley's work, but they will discover other, more immediate attractions as well. The poet sounds new notes in this book, among them the bemused intimacy of "Ode to Absent-Mindedness" and the uneasy excursion of "Frug Macabre". From lyric outburst to contemplative essay, from myths of origin to postmodern manifestos, the work assembled here is a heady variety of subject and style. Bradley manages to effect an equilibrium between inspection and introspection. By turns exuberant and wistful, informative and sly, The Fire Fetched Down is also serious fun. Bradley offers those most human of pleasures, the cultivation of… Read More

Ithica: Cornell Univ Press, 1998. Book. Fine. Soft cover. first thus. Uncorrected Proof. Poems in this volume bring readers through the construction site gate alongside the women who practice a skilled trade in a dangerous industry. Assured and impassioned, the poems not only manifest outer events and day-to-day realities of the worksite but also expose through metaphor and resonant detail its high-voltage interior life.
