Description:
Color lithograph, measuring approximately 14 1/2 x 20 1/2,” floated in a larger black frame with a gilt insert; glazed, overall approximately 19 x 25 1/2.” In excellent condition; printed in yellow, red and black, “The True Mother Goose/ With Notes and Pictures by Blanche McManus/ Lamson Wolffe & Co Boston.” Signed in the plate “B McM.” The illustration depicts a flock of geese flying over what is likely the old city of Boston and its harbor. The poster is copyrighted 1895, but the book was issued in 1896. This was the Louisiana native’s first book for children, and while she wrote and illustrated children’s and travel books in subsequent years, this remained her best work. Later books were ordinary and largely forgettable, bearing little resemblance to her early, exceptional, and even inspired efforts. The short-lived publishing firm Lamson, Wolffe failed to survive the decade.

Description:
London: Henry & Co, 1897. First Edition of the second volume of this annual publication; the first volume was issued a year earlier in the same format. Cloth spotted; some foxing; bookplate; very good in the rare pictorial jacket, which has some chips and creasing and interior archival mending (the jacket had been folded and laid into the book). The cloth, designed by Charles Ricketts, is decorated with gilt doves; the jacket cover illustration incorporates the same design of these doves in front of trees against a brick wall, the pageant passing by on the other side (flags appear above the wall). Presumably, given the identical birds, this illustration was also accomplished by Ricketts. With contributions by Beerbohm, Lionel Johnson, Housman, Rossetti, Crane, Rothenstein, et al. The most attractive art in this volume is a color woodblock print by Pissarro.
