Four page biographical sketch of the author by Abdrew E. Malone followed by 10 pages of publisher's adverts at the back. First published in Ireland in 1921, this is the first British edition. John Weldon (aka Brinsley MacNamara), 1890-1963, was an Irish actor and playwright and also worked as the registrar for the irish National Gallery in Dublin. This was his fourth published work of fiction. The externals show only mild shelf wear, the gilt lettering on the spine is still bright, the end papers are tanned and with a previous owner's name on the front free end paper, while the interior is clean and the binding is solid. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. .

Hardcover. 16mo - 17 x 11 cm.; 239 pp. Decorative red cloth with red lettering on gilt panels (both the spine and the front board) along with black border rules and scroll work on the front board, blind stamped border rules on the back board. All text block edges are gilt though there is very little of the gilding left now. No additional printings are noted though this is later printing as Charlotte Elizabeth, born in 1790, died in 1846 and "The Deserter" was first published in 1836 in Dublin by the Religious Tract and Book Society for Ireland. Charlotte Elizabeth is a pseudonym used by Hannah More who wrote many anti-Catholic works. Minor wear to the externals (board corners and spine tips) with a darkened and stained spine. Previous owner's gift note dated July 15, 1895, on the front free end paper. Otherwise the interior is clean and the binding is sound. A clear and removable archival has been fitted. .

Hardcover. 12mo - 18.5 x 12.5 cm.; 574 pp. Dark blue cloth with ornate stampings (both gilt and blind) on the spine and the front board. McCarthy (1830-1912) was an Irish nationalist from Cork who besides being very active in politics, also wrote a few quite popular novels of which this was his first. First published in 1873, this is a reprint by Sadlier and one of their "Popular Library" series. The book shows mild wear to the externals while the gilding is dulled on the spine and less so on the front board. As with many Sadlier books, the binding is a wee bit shaken though still quite sound. The interior is very clean. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. .
