The text block head edge is dyed blue as issued. Illustrated with 87 black and white plates and 43 charts and figures. The extrnals show mild shelf wear and that mainly on the tail edges of the boards, the text block head edge is a tad faded while the interior is very clean and the binding is quite solid and sound. The clipped dust jacket has a darkened spine and is worn on the edges, more so at the spine head and tail. .

Beaton began his career on the Great Lakes in 1919 and retired in 1967 having worked for Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) and serving as a master for more than half of that time. Previous owner's address label on the first blank page, otherwise a very clean interior with a solid binding. The covers show mild edge wear with a general though light age toning of the cover margins. .

The text block head edge is stained to match as issued. Number 35 in the Mariners Library. First published in 1955, this is the first Hart-Davis edition. Illustrated with 4 pages of black and white photographs and 6 maps. The externals show quite mild shelf wear with the spine being faded and sunned as are the fore and head edges of both boards though to a lesser extent. Otherwise the interior is very clean and the binding is sound and solid. .

All tipped in fold-out charts within the text are present. The externals show very mild shelf wear and the interior is clean with a solid binding. The dust jacket shows mild wear on the bottom edge while the top edge is quite worn with small chips, creases and a dime-sized piece gone near the spine top. .
