Illustrated with a centre section of 23 pages of black and white photographs. An appendix of 9 pages followed by an 11 page index. The library markings, none of which are external, are stamps on the title page and the tail margin of page 522 along with library attachments on the blank verso of the last page. Otherwise clean with a sound binding. .

From the dust jacket: "The central theme of this book can be expressed by the question, what went wrong with Vatican Council II? . . . At the two council sessions held in Rome during the autumn months of 1962 and 1963, there was a sharp struggle between the progressive tendencies (the majority of the bishops) and the conservative forces (powerfully represented in the Roman Curia)." One page appendix followed by a 9 page index. The library markings, none of which are external, are stamps on the end papers and attachments on the blank recto of the last page. Otherwise clean with a sound binding and showing only minor wear to the spine tips. The dust jacket is rubbed/worn on the spine and flap folds. .

Red card stock covers with back lettering and art work on the front cover in a saddle stapled binding. Sixteen pages of 28 black and white photographs with captions, one of which is a 2 page panorama spread of the crowd (350,000), the child's chorus (62,000) and the altar at Soldiers' Field. The covers are darkened on the margins and the spine fold in the covers is separating from the tail end to approximately half way up. The interior is very clean and aside from the cover tear at the spine, the binding is sound. .

The 'flower' is of course - Jacinta. Illustrated with many in-text drawings in black and green. Minor wear to the covers as the plastic laminate film is beginning to peel off the covers, otherwise clean with a sound binding. .

Two small ink stains on the back cover. Two leaves, pages 37/38 and 39/40. have small horizontal creases from a binding fault. Educated and trained in the US, Penfield (d: 1976) eventually moved to Montreal and was instrumental in establishing the Montreal Neurological Institute in 1934. Forty-two pages of notes and a 12 page comprehensive index. Negligible wear to the book and the jacket (unclipped with no price) has some slight sunning / fading to the head edges of both the front and back panels. Very clean with a sound binding. .

Hardcover. 0060153652 . 8vo - 23.5 x 15.5 cm.; 880 pp. Green cloth over boards with silver gilt lettering on the spine and the Harper & Row emblem blind stamped on the lower fore corner of the front board. Stated first US edition with the corresponding number line on the copyright page. Very helpful indeed for the reader is an 8 page list of the chief characters at the back. The book was first published in the west in Russian in Lausanne in 1980 and in the same year in French as "Vie et Destin". Translated from the Russian by Robert Chandler with a 10 page introduction by him and it should be noted that this introduction is copyrighted 1985 with the book then being published in 1986. The spine tips shows mild wear though a tad more so at the spine heel. Otherwise clean with a sound binding. The unclipped dust jacket has minor wear to the edges and most of that to the spine tips. The head edge of the flaps are a tad yellowed or sunned and the back panel is scuffed. A clear and removable archval cover (paperless) has been fitted to the jacket. A quite handsome copy none the less with a very good presentation. .
