Albert Millaire : Entretiens

By Jean Faucher

Les Éditions Québec Amérique, 2004. Soft cover. Very Good. Signé par l'auteur. Texte francais, couverture souple.

By Holz, Cynthia

Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Porcupines Quill, 1994. Soft cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. Signed by Author. Soft cover. Very good condition. 190 pages. Onlyville opens in 1974 on the eastern seaboard of the United States against the background of the Watergate scandal and the pulsating pressure to impeach Richard Nixon. But all that is merely white noise for Anna Berman, who is floundering in her own turbid crisis. At 29, she has most of an undergraduate degree, a non-career as a temp, and an aging and overwhelming lover, Sal, a paranoid Korean War vet. In desperation Anna flees to her family's abandoned cottage in Onlyville. She dives into her past, hoping to emerge refreshed and unfettered by the ghost of her mother, who one day, years before, left Anna sitting on the beach, watching, while she swam away until she disappeared.'

LIKE LESSER GODS

By TOMASI, MARI

MIlwaukee: The Bruce Publishing, 1949. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. Signed by Mari Tomasi on title page.Hard cover, no dust jacket, very good condition. This is a somewhat leaden tribute to the men who from the '20s to the '40s toiled in the quarries of Barre, Vt., portrayed here by a native daughter as Granitetown, and to the families that had to watch so many of them die of job-related tuberculosis. In this telling, the eyes that are observant and the heart always eager to help belong to Mister Tiff (ne Tiffone), a lapsed seminarian from Italy come to set right the lives of many temporarily floundering souls. Near the end of the book, he is gratified when "his friends, each in his own way, had gained in well-being." Love of one's work and the joy of doing good in general are clearly the primary values. Equally old-fashioned is the prose: "A tumultuous pounding racked her breast. Outwardly she was still; tensely still. . . ." First published in 1949, this book does capture something of the sadness of these "lesser gods" who welcome their fate by essentially carving their own tombstones, but is, overall, as simplistic, mopey and uncompelling now as it must have been then.
