A LEARICAL LEXICON: FROM THE WORKS OF EDWARD LEAR [LIMITED EDITION SIGNED TWICE]

By Edward Lear [Ed Myra Cohn Livingston]

N Y: Atheneum. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1985. First Edition. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; Book Details: "Mary Cohn Livingston, the widely known poet and anthologist, long a student and admirer of Edward Lear's work, has selected a variety of his outlandish words, which appear here in alphabetical order. Joseph Low, the distinguished graphic artist, who keeps Lear's books nearby for his own diversion and pleasure, has caught the true spirit of Lear in his brilliant, witty line drawings, which heightens the delightful absurdity of the words." (From text on front flap) . Condition / Notes: This is a scarce stated first printing, signed by illustrator under limitation statement at front of volume and again at top of half title page, with dedication to previous owner. Volume is bound in brown cloth with stamped dark brown lettering to spine and vignette in lower right corner of front cover. Book and dust jacket are in excellent condition. Author: Edward Lear - Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet, and is known now mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularized. His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to illustrate birds and animals; making colored drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred Tennyson's poems. As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense works, which use real and invented English words. ; Signed by Illustrator .
