Warmly inscribed copy of Casey’s “Jazz Age” crime novel which was drawn from a combination of his reports on the mobs in Chicago for the Chicago Daily News and his travels in the Orient. He has signed on the front free end paper: “For / [name] / Who for some odd reason wanted an autograph – / In astonishment, / Bob Casey / Chicago ? Book This is a rare hardcover for Whittington, who was known as the “King of the Paperbacks,” writing over 200 novels under several different names, most in the crime, hardboiled detective and noir genres, as in this case. According to the blurb on the rear fold, he had written over 50 books by 1957. Not only was this novel published as a hardback, the blurb reports, "With Play for Keeps he is for the first time published simultaneously in the United States and Great Britain."
