Quercus does not offer an opinion, but here is her first book, that would later burst upon the world as "Finnegan's Wake." Whoever she was in Joyce's mind, she became the heroine of what has been called "the most impenetrable novel of the Twentieth Century." This is a Fine copy of the third impression of the First Edition, published in June 1930, part of the Criterion Miscellany (#15). Stiff white paper boards. London: William Reeves, 1895. Wilde had been convicted of "gross indecency" in 1895; this is a defense of the Irish playwright by the pianist and composer Dalhousie Young (1866-1921). He argues that Wilde's writing should not have been held against him and questions whether consensual sexual acts should be illegal.This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Held by major universities in the British Isles, but rare in the trade. Softbound, in stapled brown paper wraps. Clean text; 45 pages; very bright and fresh. Two volumes, bound in olive paper-covered boards with parchment spines; gilt titling on the spine and front covers. Clean texts; 120 pages and 99 pages; top-edges are gilt. The corners have mild bumping; typical offset to the endpapers; fore-edges are spotted. The very fragile spines are darkened, but the gilt remains bright. This is the Second Printing of the "Pocket Edition" of Synge's works, an even smaller version of what was already a diminutive design, and would have had a companion volume - this is Parts Three and Four only, in Near Fine condition. Olive-green paper-covered boards with a vellum spine, gilt lettering. Clean text; 99 pages. There is a neatly-penned previous owner signature on the FFEP, and the spine is somewhat rubbed/darkened. Dublin & London: At the Sign of the Three Candles & Hamish Hamilton, 1934. Tom O Flaherty, the older brother of Liam, was like him raised in the Aran Islands and was a native Irish speaker. They shared a radical view of Irish and world politics, both of them at one time members of the Communist Party. Tom published two volumes of short stories (written in English) prior to his death in 1936. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, which is uncommon to rare. Oatmeal-colored cloth binding with lettering and a representation of an Aran curragh in blue. Clean text; 192 pages; illustrated with photographs. There is a slight splay, else a Fine copy.
