Description:
Boston: Loring, Publisher, 1870. Although Horatio Alger (1832-1899) attempted adult fiction, he was more comfortable with "Boy's Books. "The Luggage Boy" is the fifth volume in Alger's "Ragged Dick" Series, which began in 1867 and was his first real success. Alger eventually published something like 100 novels, generally following the same format. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Green cloth binding with extensive blindstamping; title on spine is gilt, along with an image of Dick himself at the foot. Clean text; 290 pages. Frontis illustration opposite a list of his "Successful Juvenile Works," some still in preparation; this indicates to Quercus that this is probably a Later Printing. Rubbed at the margins (most at head and foot of spine), somewhat cocked. Two period name stamps on the front endpapers. A sound copy, but not for the advanced collector. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very… Read More

Description:
New York & Philadelphia: D. Appleton & George S. Appleton, 1843. Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) is often considered "the first modern sociologist;" with typical Victorian energy she also wrote on history, political economy, and children's literature. This title was first published in England in 1841; the First American Edition was by Appleton in 1842. Here is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the version issued by Appleton as "Tales for the People and Their Children" (on the half-title). A sweet little Victorian book, and not common. Blue-green decorative cloth binding. Heavily blind-stamped on the front cover with a floral design and the title; fancy gilt filligre and title on the spine. Clean text; 177 pages, plus two pages in the rear advertising the various "Tales" in the series. Mild bumping to the corners; typical rubbing to the head and foot of the spine; nonetheless, a Very Good (Plus) copy. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. First… Read More

Description:
Boston: Estes and Lauriat, 1898. James Otis Kaler (1848-1912) was an amazingly prolific author of children's literature, with some two hundred titles writen under the name "James Otis" and several pseudonyms. He had several series; this title is part of "The Privateers of 1812 Series." Interestingly, Otis insists he is merely the "Editor" and includes a Note to that effect. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition; this title is surprisingly scarce, considering his output. Yellow cloth decorative binding, with the cover illustrating a sailing ship of the time surrounded by coiling rope. Clean text; 173 pages. Illustrated by A.B. Shute. Previous-owner signature on the FFEP. Mild bumps and some soiling to the covers. A very solid copy, and lacking any juvenalia. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Decorative Cloth.
