Sir Moses Montefiore (1784-1885), the British banker and Jewish philanthropist, established the first settlement of the New Yishuv in Palestine (he was also notable for his opposition to Reform Judaism); a major figure of modern Jewish history.This is a Very Good Plus set of the First Edition, comprising Two Volumes, 389 pages and 363 pages. Nicely bound in blue cloth with blindstamping in gilt - portrait of the Montefiores on front cover. Decorative endpapers. Clean and fresh text. Mildly bumped with some rubbing to head and foot of spine. There are 3-4 spots on the front panels. By 1939, the generalized anti-Semitism of the decade was crystalized around Hitler's rise in Nazi Germany. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition. Uncommon to scarce. Consists of an Introduction and 23 chapters on a variety of discussion topics. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. (No date or author listed, but per OCLC dated 1938 and written by Sigmund Livingston, who founded the ADL in 1913. However, the text indicates a later publishing date of at least 1939.) Simon Dubnow (1860-1941), a "non-Zionist Jewish nationalist" developed a sociological approach to Jewish history; his magnificent "History of the Jews in Russian and Poland" remains a true delight to read and study. Fleeing the pogroms, he lived in Berlin and wrote in German; in a disturbing coda, he was murdered by the Gestapo in 1941. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition, a thoughtful group of essays. Quite a scarce work. Red ribbed cloth binding with gilt lettering.
