The covers are soiled, have bubbles of lifted fabric, and the cloth is missing at the spine ends but the binding is solid and square. 318 indexed pages. Illustrated with occasional portraits and drawings. Biography of a woman who started her career at age 38, best known as the Editor of ""Godey's Lady's Book"", author of 12 books and hundreds of poems (including Mary Had A Little Lamb""), responsible for Thanksgiving as a national holiday, early champion of elementary education for girls equal to that of boys and of higher education women. First to advocate women as teachers in public schools, helped organize Vassar College and many more things supporting women and children and preserving our heritage.
