Kryn Taconis - Photojournalist

By National Archives (Canada)

Ottawa: Canadian Government Publishing Centre. Paperback. 0660548267 viii, 146 pages. Text in English and French. Profusely illustrated with glossy black and white reproductions of photos. "Dutch-born Kryn Taconis has left us as his legacy a body of work that stretches over thirty-five years - from 1944 to 1979. As a member of the Resistance, he cast a special light upon the grave privation of the people of Amsterdam, who were starved by the German occupiers during the winter of 1944-1945. He was later associated with the Magnum agency for ten years during which he proved himself as an independent photographer and displayed his sympathies and his humanist affinities in numerous stories from all over the world. Finally, his twenty years of association with Canadian illustrated magazines such as the Star Weekly gave him the occasion to wield great influence in establishing new standards of quality in Canadian photojournalism." - Preface. Clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Binding sound. A quality copy of this impressive work. . Good. 1989. First Edition.

Setting the Record Straight. Letters From Cell #7

Setting the Record Straight. Letters From Cell #7

By Zundel, Ernst

USA: Soaring Eagles Gallery. Paperback. B000ETLQ7I Prominent revisionist historian Ernst Zundel [1939-2017] was deported from the United States to Canada in 2003 after he was alleged to have missed an immigration interview. In Canada he was placed into solitary confinement at the Toronto West Detention Centre where he would remain until his deportation to Germany in 2005. In prison Zundel maintained a steady stream of written correspondence with his supporters around the world. In 2004 his American wife, Ingrid Rimland Zundel [1936-2017], requested recipients of his letters to forward them to her for compilation into this 182 page book. Zundel's prison living conditions were harsh and his writing utensils were limited to stubby pencils which prison officials would only infrequently allow to be sharpened or replaced. Despite this, Zundel, formerly a commercial artist, produced diminutive works of art to include in his letters to thank his supporters. Included with this book is one such artistic sample, a simple 4" x 3.5" pencil crayon illustration of three snowdrop flowers, signed and dated by Zundel on 24 Dec. 2003. Beneath the illustration Zundel wrote "Painted in Solitary in a Canadian Prison". "The law under which I am held is very complex and only recently passed by the Canadian Parliament after 9/11. It allows a Canadian judge of the Federal Court to hear secret witnesses and secret evidence. Neither my attorney nor I will be told the names of these witnesses." - back cover. This copy was carefully studied and extensively marked up by its prior owner and shows above-average wear. Ironically, the law used to imprison Zundel was unanimously ruled unconstitutional by Canada's Supreme Court in 2007. . Fair. 2004. First Edition.

Tull

Tull

By Tull, William

USA: Northland Press. Hardcover. B000QABXDM 117 unnumbered pages. Fifty-two glossy full-page colour reproductions of paintings by William Tull. Each painting accompanied by a brief description. "There are those who would vainly try to categorize William Tull as a Southwestern painter - or even as a contemporary classical impressionist. It is true that many of his paintings use the southwest as subject and background; and many do evoke the architecture and spirit of the Pueblo Indian as man in harmony with the earth. On very broad terms he belongs to the school of American Impressionists. But still, you can't categorize Tull, nor his paintings. So critics and laymen alike are left, quite simply, with this: the sheer, unadulterated joy of experiencing the vitality and robustness of life in a Tull painting." - Bill Byron. Light wear to clean and unmarked book which is bound in attractive cream-colored cloth. Slight bow to front board. Binding tight. Average wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A quality copy. Laid-in is a photo-illustrated 1991 magazine article about Tull's village of desert homes, Adobes de la Tierra, at The Boulders in Carefree, Arizona. . Very Good. 1979. First Edition.
