Lumberjack

By Kurelek, William [Signed]

Montreal: Tundra Books. Hardcover. 088776052X Signed, without inscription, by William Kurelek upon title page. Stated first printing. "As a young man Kurelek [1927-1977] signed up as a lumberjack in the Canadian bush. Here he has drawn on his memories and experiences and in detailed text and 25 stunning full-color paintings he describes a way of life that has virtually disappeared. Here we see how the lumberjack used his tools to fell trees, buck the wood, and pile it into cords. Each man was paid for his own work, so more often than not he worked alone. However, there was a hearty camaraderie when the men returned to camp in the evening, to eat their enormous meals and swap stories as they lay on their bunk beds warmed by the old iron stove." - dust jacket. Oblong 28.5 x 22cm. Book clean and unmarked with very light wear to publisher's tan cloth. Binding tight. Small faint sticker ghost to upper front corner of dust jacket which otherwise bears moderate wear and soiling and is now preserved in glossy new archival-grade Brodart. A special copy of this heartwarming piece of Canadiana written and illustrated by one of the nation's most beloved artists. Bibliographic reference: Bishop p.1019. . Very Good. 1974. First Edition.

Geometrical Drawing for Art Students

By Morris, I. H.

London: Longmans. Hardcover. B0000EEXI2 Please note: this copy is the eleventh edition from 1908. First published in 1890. 13 x 9 cm. [8], 242, [2] ads pages. Many black and white diagrams plus several photos. "Prepared to meet the wants of those students who only require the Geometry necessary for the Art Student's Course. Contains over seven hundred figures arranged in a convenient form, and a very complete and exhaustive collection of exercises, and covers rather more ground than is absolutely necessary for the South Kensington Examination in Geometrical Drawing. The Chapter on Solid Geometry has been made unusually full, as the Author's experience is that one of the student's chief difficulties is the want of sufficient variety of examples in this important branch of the subject." - Preface to first edition. Average wear to publisher's decorated olive cloth. Binding intact. Prior owner's details in very light pencil upon front free endpaper. Ink initials atop half-title page. Occasional light pencil marks to contents. A sound vintage copy of this helpful text. . Good. 1908. Eleventh Edition.

Photography against the grain: Essays and photo works, 1973-1983 (The Nova Scotia series : source materials of the contemporary arts)

By Sekula, Allan

Halifax, Nova Scotia: Press of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Paperback. 0919616283 xv, [1], 259 pages. Photography throughout, primarily in black and white. "This is a book about photography. This is also a book of photographs, a book that speaks within and alongside and through photographs. Here is one way in which this book brushes photography against the grain: normally separated tasks - of writer and photographer, of 'critic' and 'visual artist' - are here allowed to coexist, perhaps uneasily, between the covers of a single volume." - Introduction. Publication of this work coincided with an exhibition of the same name at the Ohio State Gallery of Fine Art, November 16 - December 7, 1984. Contents clean and unmarked. Binding intact. Somewhat above-average wear to dust jacket and covers. A sound copy of this treasured work. . Good. 1984. First Edition.
