Boston to London, 1735.
This two-page stampless folded letter measures 15" x 11¾" unfolded. It was sent by William Clark in Boston "To Mr Christr: Kilby / Mercht / In London". The letter was favor carried by a ship's master, Captain Cary. In nice shape. Transcript will be provided.
The letter which is primarily about the export of beaver pelts reads in part:
"Inclosed you have Invoice and bill of lading for the three hhd [hogshead] and a box of Beaver. . .. Description:
Retsoff, New York to Springboro, Pennsylvania, 1888. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This grouping contains a March 10th, 1888, bill of lading from the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad Company and a shipping notice from Foster & Brown, agents of the "Retsof Mining Co., Miners and Shippers of Salt," dated March 14, 1888 along with the two-cent green stamped envelope used for mailing. All in nice shape. Until the late 1800s, the need for salt in New York was met primarily by using brine springs near Syracuse. However, in 1882, an amateur geologist named Carroll Cocher predicted that there were vast underground deposits of salt in Livingston County. He obtained funding from several New York City investors and dug test wells that discovered a massive vein of salt 1,000 feet below the surface. The principal investor, William Foster, became president of the mining company which he named Retsof, i.e. Foster spelled backwards. Wonderful early Teddy Bear book illustrated with photographs and featuring two Steiff stuffed bears. Includes photos of tin houses, toy soldiers, a soft monkey, and lots of dolls. Full-page photographs alternate with text pages. Sound binding with original cloth spine in nice shape. Hinges have old neatly done cloth reinforcement. Clean pages with an occasional finger smudge. Several leaves have faint corner folds. Pencil gift inscription on front free endpaper. Some soiling and wear to cover. A very nice example of a very scarce children's book.
