"The reader will comprehend at once this book was not desiqned as a Treasury of imperishable American poems. To make a rigidly eclectic volume would be a diversion, and sometimes I have thought to spend a few evenings in obtaining two thirds of it from pieces named in the critical essays to which the present exhibit is supplementary. In fact, more than one projector of a handbook upon the lines of Palgrave's little classic has adopted the plan suggested, and has paid a like compliment to the texts revised by the editors of "A Library of American Literature"...." - Introduction from An American Anthology: 1787-1900: Selections Illustrating The Editors Critical Review Of American Poetry In The Nineteenth Century

There is a mark on the first page that has bled through to the first title page. The pages are yellowed and tanned. The binding is loose, but the pages are intact and solid. "As works on the early Orient multiply, it becomes more and more easy to produce such books at second and third hand, which are thus separated by a long remove from the original monuments forming our primary sources of knowledge. As the use of this volume is in a measure conditioned by the method which produced it, may the author state that it is based directly and immediately upon the monuments, and in most cases upon the original monuments, rather than upon any published edition of the same? For this purpose the historical monuments still standing in Egypt, or installed in the museums of Europe (the latter in toto), were copied or collated by the author anew ad hoc and rendered into English (see infra, p. 445, B. Translations, BAR). Upon this complete version the present volume rests. Those students who desire to consult the sources upon which any given fact is based, are referred to this English corpus. A full bibliography of each original document, if desired, will also be found there, and hence no references to such technical bibliography will be found herein, thus freeing the reader from a massof workshop debris, to which, however, he can easily refer, if he desires it." - Preface, A History Of The Ancient Egyptians

The previous owners marks are inside on the front cover board. The pages are yellowed and tanned. The edges of the pages are tattered. The binding is loose and some of the pages are loose. This book is 110 years old and perfect for the serious collectors. "A re-statement of the scope of this Series seems a necessary preliminary to each successive volume. No formal biography is contemplated. There has been no attempt to tell in chronological order the life-story of any of the persons discussed, although the temptation in my case-and presume the same is true of the other authors in the Series-has been strong to do just that thing. The volumes of the Series, therefore, are the result of the exercise of at least one quality which goes to make a successful book-self restraint." - The True Andrew Jackson

The previous owners mark is on the front end page. The pages are yellowed and tanned and the binding is loose but still intact. This book is 112 years old and is a perfect collectors item. "In a book this size it is clearly impossible to give a full description of the architecture of the thirty cathedrals of England. The principal aim of this book is to throw something of a personal interest around the cathedrals, by giving glimpses of the bishops, rulers, and other noted personages who have been connected with them through the long series of years which have elapsed since their erection. At the same time, an attempt has been made to state briefly but comprehensively the salient and distinguishing characteristics of each edifice." - Author's Forward, The Cathedrals Of England

Select Orations of Cicero With English Notes

By Charles Anthon, LL.D.

This antiquarian book is in fair condition. The binding is loose and cracked along the spine The cover is very worn on the edges corner and spine. There appears to be some water damage as well as some mold and mildew damage. The pages are yellowed and tanned and warped. The previous owners signature is on the front end page dated 1858. This book is a wonderful collectors item, but needs some good care and repair. Charles Anthon is famous in connection with the history of the Latter Day Saint movement because of his interactions with Martin Harris concerning a fragment of Joseph Smith's translation of the Book of Mormon. The fragment was later known as the Anthon Transcript. According to Harris, Anthon wrote Harris a letter of authenticity declaring the fragment to contain true Egyptian characters. Anthon was also reported to have confirmed the translation of these characters as correct. When informed that an angel of God had revealed the characters to Joseph Smith, Anthon reportedly tore up the authentication stating that there was no such thing as angels and asked Harris to bring the plates to him for translation. Martin Harris went to Dr. Samuel L. Mitchill afterwards and received a letter of authenticity from him. Anthon, however, disagreed with Harris' version of their encounter and stated in a letter to a Mr. E.D. Howe on February 17, 1834, that the story of Anthon's authentication was false, that Anthon had identified the writings as a hoax, and that Anthon had told Harris that the writings were part of "a scheme to cheat the farmer [Martin Harris] of his money...."

Pilgrim's Progress

By John Bunyan

This book is in poor condition. The binding is loose and coming apart. The previous owners names are written on the inside front board and the first end page. The cover is worn and spotted on the edges, corners and spine. The pages inside are tanned, yellowed and torn. The last four pages of the index are loose and pinned together. The only reason I am selling this book is because it is a collector's item. This book is almost 150 years old. The Pilgrim's Progress From This World, To That Which Is To Come, written by writer and preacher John Bunyan while in prison, is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. In the Christian allegory, the characters function as embodiments of the moral qualities in their names: Christian, Christiana, Great-heart, and Hopeful, to name a few.Though it now appears in one volume, Nathaniel Ponder of London originally published the two parts of The Pilgrim's Progress separately, printing Part 1 in 1678 and Part II later, in 1684. Part I of the Pilgrim's Progress quickly sold out, requiring a second edition within the year. The next year, a third edition — the definitive edition of the book — was printed, with revisions as well as a number of scenes added by Bunyan.
