Without a new theological reformation, the Christian church as the authentic body of Christ may not survive. As a Christian, a theologian, and a churchman within the Reformed tradition, I must believe that it is possible for the church to exist even though it may be in serious error in substance, strategy, style, or spirit. Martin Luther faced this haunting and recurring question: 'Am I alone right and is all the rest of the church wrong?' "... - Chapter One from Self Esteem: The New Reformation

When this work was included in the New Testament the two parts were separated. (The present arrangement in the Bible puts the gospels in one group, the letters in another, while Acts takes its place between the two, with the Revelation of John after the letters.)" - Introduction One from The Anchor Bible: The Acts Of The Apostles

Nero

By John Bishop

This book is in very good condition. There is little or no wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards. There is no bumping or fraying on the cover boards. The previous owner has signed the front inside cover board. The pages are yellowing and tanning, however the pages are clear of markings. "It was on October 13th in the year 54 that the young Nero was hailed as Emperor by the Praetorian Guard. The senate followed suit together with the soldiers of the armies in the provinces. Nero's reign had thus begun in an atmosphere of unanimity and enthusiasm that could hardly have been hoped for. The young man, not yet seventeen, seemed to be the signal for a new beginning and perhaps this marked the return to the longed-for stability of the Augustan age. This atmosphere of goodwill had another origin beside this, however. A young man of seventeen may perhaps have symbolized the innocence and guilelessness of one not yet corrupted by the rigors of political life. More certainly his very youth was likely to produce a deeper and more insidious corruption as the various elements in the state that were traditionally jealous of power maneuvered themselves into positions from which they and not the Emperor could wield it. A young and not unintelligent boy of seventeen seemed to suit exactly the requirements of the situation. The opening acts of his reign were conventional and proper, although Tacitus, to set the scene according to his own requirements, tells the story of a couple of political murders, probably engineered by Agrippina without Nero's knowledge or at least against his wishes, as a curtain-raiser to his thirteenth book of Annals, before going on to the story of Nero's opening acts as Emperor...." - Chapter One from Nero

The previous owner has signed and dated the inside of the front cover board. There seems to be no bumping or fraying of the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, but the pages are free of markings. "The following efforts bear the title Theology of Hope, not because they set out once again to present eschatology as a separate doctrine and to compete with the well known textbooks. Rather, their aim is to show how theology can set out from hope and begin to consider its theme in an eschatological light. For this reason they enquire into the ground of the hope of Christian faith and into the responsible exercise of this hope in thought and action in the world today. The various critical discussions should not be understood as rejections and condemnations. They are necessary conversations on a common subject which is so rich that it demands continual new approaches. Hence, I hope they may make it clear that even critical questions can be a sign of theological partnership. I have thus to thank all who have stimulated, and all who have opposed me...." - Preface from Theology Of Hope Theology Of Hope

"Scholarship in this country for long clung to the traditional view of the Fourth Gospel, and we still lack in English a satisfactory commentary on the whole text written from the standpoint of the more moderate among recent continental commentators. That the present volume will at all adequately fill up a very obvious blank I can hardly hope; but it is offered as an attempt, however imperfect, to give the English reader in commentary form the results of the modern criticism of the Gospel so admirably set forth, e.g. in E.F. Scott's The Fourth Gospel, its Purpose and Theology...." - Preface from The Moffatt New Testament Commentary: The Gospel Of John

For whereas it was the expectation of many, who wished not well unto our Scion That upon the setting of that bright Occidental Star, Queen Elizabeth of most happy memory, some thick and palpable clouds of darkness would so have overshadowed this Land, that men should have been in doubt which way they were to walk; and that it should hardly be known, who was to direct the unsettled State; the appearance of Your Majesty, as of the Sun in his strength, instantly dispelled those supposed and surmised mists, and gave unto all that were well affected exceeding cause of comfort; especially when we beheld the Government established in Your Highness, and Your hopeful Seed, by an undoubted Title, and this also accompanied with peace and tranquillity at home and abroad...." - The Holy Bible: Containing The Old And The New Testaments And The Apocrypha Translated Out Of The Original Tongues: And With The Former Translations Diligently Compared And Revised By His Majesty's Special Command

"In May 1946 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland received an overture from the Presbytery of Stirling and Dunblane, where it had been initiated by the Reverend G.S. Hendry, recommending that a translation of the Bible be made in the language of the present day, inasmuch as the language of the Authorized Version, already archaic when it was made, had now become even more definitely archaic and less generally understood. The General Assembly resolved to make an approach to other Churches, and, as a result, delegates of the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, and the Methodist, Baptist, and Congregational Churches me t in conference in October. They recommended that the work should be undertaken; that a completely new translation should be made, rather than a revision, such as had earlier been contemplated by the University Presses of Oxford and Cambridge; and that the translators should be free to employ a contemporary idiom rather than reproduce the traditional 'biblical' English...." - Preface To The New English Bible
