The pages are yellowed and tanned and clear of any markings. "These pages were not originally written with a view to publication. They are merely the result of several years of study. I only publish them now on the advice of a friend whose judgement in matters liturgical I am bound to respect. For I am fully conscious of the defects of this little book. Liturgical study demands an amount of sustained concentration and exactitude which is practically incompatible with the busy and broken life of a Diocesan Inspector...." - Preface from The Eucharistic Office Of The Book Of Common Prayer

The Book of Common Prayer

By Century Hutchinson

This book is in very good condition. There is little to no wear on the cover boards. The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board and his seal is affixed on the contents page. "It hath been the wisdom of the Church of England, ever since the first compiling of her Publick Liturgy, to keep the mean between the two extremes, of too much stiffness in refusing, and of too much easiness in admitting any variation from it. For, as on one side common experience sheweth, that where a change hath been made of things advisedly established (no evident necessity so requiring) sundry inconveniences have thereupon ensued; and those many times more and greater than the evils, that were intended to be remedied by such change: So on the other side, the particular Forms of Divine worship, and the Rites and Ceremonies appointed to be used therein, being things in their own nature indifferent, and alterable, and so acknowledged; it is but reasonable, that upon weighty and important considerations, according to the various exigency of times and occasions, such changes and alterations should be made therein, as to those that are in place of Authority should from time to time seem either necessary or expedient. Accordingly we find, that in the Reigns of several Princes of blessed memory since the Reformation, the Church, upon just and weighty considerations her thereunto moving, hath yielded to make such alterations in some particulars, as in their responsive times were thought convenient: Yet so, as that the main Body and Essentials of it (as well in the chiefest materials, as in the frame and order thereof) have still continued the same unto this day, and do yet stand firm and unshaken, notwithstanding all the vain attempts and impetuous assaults made against it, by such men as are given to change, and have always discovered a greater regard to their own private fancies and interests, than to that duty they owe to the publick...." - The Preface from The Book of Common Prayer

This book is in very good condition. There is little to no wear on the cover boards. There is a large ding on the front cover board at the top. The pages are white, crisp and clean of any markings. This book is signed by David Stancliffe, Bishop of Salisbury, Chairman of the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England and erstwhile Chairman of the Advisory Panel for Celebrating Common Prayer. "A word of explanation about why this book has been produced and how it differs from the full version of Celebrating Common Prayer is probably in order. Many who use and enjoy celebrating the Office from Celebrating Common Prayer have said that, particularly when they are travelling, the book plus Bible is simply too heavy and cumbersome. So we have included a selection of short bible readings which follow the same daily and weekly pattern as the psalms; so you do not need to carry a separate Bible...." - Preface from Celebrating Common Prayer: The Pocket Version

A Manual Of Ceremonial

By Marion J. Hatchett

This book is in very good condition. There is little to no wear on the front, back and spine of the cover boards. The edges have slight wear and the corners have minor bumping. The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board. The pages are relatively still white, crisp and clean of all markings. "The results of research in liturgy within the last few decades and the impact of the liturgical Movement Have caused manuals on religious ceremonial which were used in the past decades, such as, for example, A Prayer Book Manual published by the Episcopal Evangelical Fellowship on the one hand, or Ritual Notes by E.C.R. Lamburn and various "Missals" on the other hand, to seem as outdated and as lacking in liturgical nsophistication as, say, the Schofield Reference Bible for Biblical scholarship or the David C. Cook Series for Christian Education. Even the more sophisticated older works such as the pamphlets on ceremonial which have been published by the Alcuin Club or the Anglican Society now seem highly dated. The Church Army has published several helpful and sophisticated customaries for certain rites or days. (A Customary for the Holy Eucharist; A Handbook for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday; The Virgil of Easter Eve) which can be highly recommended, but aside from those little is available that has been arranged with the American Book of Common Prayer or with Services for Trial Use or Authoirized Services 1973 in view. It is an effort to fill this gap that this manual has been compiled...." - from A Manual Of Ceremonial

"Most of the objections urged by the Dissenters against the Church of England, to justify their separation from it, being levelled against its form and manner of divine worship, prescribed in the Book of Common Prayer, &c., are, in the following Discourse, answered, as fully as its brevity would permit. So that, though the principal design of this book be to instruct such as are friends to our Church and Liturgy; yet it is not impossible but that, by the blessing of God, it may in some measure contribute to the undeceiving some that are enemies to both, (such I mean as are disaffected to the former, upon no other account, than a prejudice to the latter;) especially could we, by first convincing them of the Liturgies in general, prevail with them to take an impartial view of what is here offered in behalf of our own. To this end therefore, and to make the following sheets of as genera luse as I can, I shall, by way of Introduction, endeavor to prove these three things; viz." - A Rational Illustration Of The Book Of Common Prayer Of The Church Of England
