"The Papyrus of Ani is the largest, the most perfect, and the best illuminated of all the papyri containing copies of the Theban Recension of the Book of the Dead. Its rare Vignettes, Hymns, and Chapters, and its descriptive Rubrics, tender it of unique importance for the study of the Book of the Dead, and it holds a very high place among the funerary papyri that were written between B.C. 1500 and B.C. 1350. Although it contains less than one-half of the Chapters which formed the Great Corpus of texts written for the benefit of the dead, we may conclude that Ani's exalted official position, as Chancellor of the ecclesiastical revenues and endowments of all the Temples of Thebes and Abydos, ensured the inclusion of all the Chapters which an educated Egyptian deemed essential for salvation. The Papyrus of Ani is, in short, typical of the Book of the Dead in voque among the Theban nobles of his time...." - Preface from The Book Of The Dead: The Heiroglyphic Transcript of the Papyrus of ANI, the Translation into English and An Introduction by E. "As works on the early Orient multiply, it becomes more and more easy to produce such books at second and third hand, which are thus separated by a long remove from the original monuments forming our primary sources of knowledge. As the use of this volume is in a measure conditioned by the method which produced it, may the author state that it is based directly and immediately upon the monuments, and in most cases upon the original monuments, rather than upon any published edition of the same? For this purpose the historical monuments still standing in Egypt, or installed in the museums of Europe (the latter in toto), were copied or collated by the author anew ad hoc and rendered into English (see infra, p. 445, B. Translations, BAR). Upon this complete version the present volume rests. Those students who desire to consult the sources upon which any given fact is based, are referred to this English corpus. A full bibliography of each original document, if desired, will also be found there, and hence no references to such technical bibliography will be found herein, thus freeing the reader from a massof workshop debris, to which, however, he can easily refer, if he desires it." - Preface, A History Of The Ancient Egyptians

There are are no markings inside the book. The pages are just beginning to yellow an tan. "Giovanni Domenico Theopolo's set of twenty-seven etchings entitled Picturesque Ideas of the Flight into Egypt is perhaps the most enchanting of his printmaking accomplishments. Within the history of printed scenes of Christ's life, which began in the fifteenth century, this series is probably unique in format; there is no other depiction known of the Flight into Egypt in such an extended sequence.Beyond this novel aspect, the set reveals the inspiration of Tiepolo's native Venice-her sunny skies and sparkling lagoons, her passion for theatrical spectacles, her artistic heritage of pageant masters. The joyous effects of light, space, and air in these prints reflect the achievements of the eighteenth-century Venetian etchers whose characteristic broken lines captured their city's shimmering atmosphere." - Picturesque Ideas of the Flight into Egypt

The Pyramids And Sphinx

By Desmond Stirling Stewart

This book is in very good condition. This book has minimal wear on the front, back, spine, edges, and corners. The pages are still white, clean, and crisp. "Immense, mysterious, almost menacing, the pyramids of Egypt loom on the horizon southwest of modern Cairo. The only survivors of the seven wonders of the ancient world, these awesome tombs have aroused the curiosity and admiration of tourists, scholars, and even those who have lived within their shadow for four and a half millennia. The author of the following narrative uses the pyramids - and their mute, enigmatic sentinel, the Sphinx - as the focal point for a sweeping panorama of Egyptian history." - Introduction, The Pyramids And Sphinx
