The road was U.S. 17, south from Jacksonville, North Carolina, through the Holly Shelter Swamp to Wilmington, where the hospital was. My father backed the Chevrolet out of its place in the hay barn next to the farm cart and helped my mother into the front seat on the afternoon of September 9, 1934. He made the trip in little more than an hour, barely slowing down for the stop signs in Dixon, Folkstone, and Holly Ridge. I was born the next morning with rambling in my blood and fifty miles already under my belt...." - Chapter One from A Life on the Road

Stevenson was born February 5, 1900, on the threshold of the twentieth century. He lived through nearly two thirds of the century and died on July 14, 1965. He was a wanderer and happened to be born in California and to die in England, but his roots were in Bloomington, Illinois. On the next to last Christmas of his life, ambassador of the United States to the United Nations, he went home to Bloomington to visit his sister Buffie in the big old house on East Washington Street where they grew up. He had just come from the UN and he was tired and late in the afternoon lay down on the green velvet sofa in the bay window in the living room and went to sleep. Outside it got dark. His sister came in and quietly lit the lights on the Christmas tree, then stepped into the adjoining library and sat and watched him. The living room was Victorian, filled with Dresden lamps their mother had bought in Germany and an ornate table she had bought in New Orleans, a Japanese sword and a carved elephant tusk their father had bought in Japan. After a while Stevenson shook himself a little, raised his head, then said, Buffie....?" - Chapter One from Adlai Stevenson Of Illinois "

She left the table and hurried to the Tower Chamber, which had been prepared for the event. The royal collection of sacred relics occupied every corner, the three thorns from Christ's crown, one of the nails from His Cross, a fragment of the Cross itself, a piece of Our Lady's mantel, and dozens of treasures only less rare. To these had been added other very special ones, known to be helpful on such occasions. Father Juan de Ojalvo had hurried to Madrid with the walking-stick of Santo Domingo, Abbot of Silos; and from San Juan de Ortega's convent, his miraculous belt had been brought by the Prior himself...." - Chapter One from Carlos:The King Who Would Not Die

The Western Fathers

By Sulpicus Severus, Paulinus The Deacon, Possidus, Bishop Of Calma, Hilary, Bishop Of Arles, Constantinus Of Lyons (Translated and Edited by F. R. Hoare)

This book is in good condition. The cover has some wear on the front, back, spine and edges. The corners have some bumping. The pages are slightly yellowed, but clear of any markings. "The biographical writings in this volume are the primary sources for the Lives of the five Western Fathers with whom they deal. If the purpose of this series were to convert the contemporary pictures of the makers of Christendom into biographies of the modern type, each of them would have to be pulled to pieces, supplemented from other sources, interpreted in the light of later knowledge and reconstructed on quite a different plan. Since in actual fact the purpose of the series is largely to enable the twentieth-century reader to see these makers of Christendom as far as possible as their contemporaries saw them, it would seem that the task of the translator is to preserve as far as possible the feeling and manner of the original, and that the task of the editor is far as possible to put the twentieth-century reader in possession of the knowledge of the setting of the Lives which the contemporary readers had and which the writers took for granted...." - Preface from The Western Fathers: Being The Lives of Martin of Tours, Ambrose, Augustine of Hippo, Hororatus of Aries

The previous owners name is written on the inside front cover board. The pages are yellowed and tanned, but are free of any markings. "The Newman of the popular imagination is the Newman of later years: the defender of his faith in the Apologia pro Vita Sua; the Dean of English converts; the saintly old man in the robes of a cardinal. When he died in 1890 his name was already a legend, and the legend has endured because his effect on his time has been surpassed by his legacy to generations that followed. The reforming movement that he had once helped to inaugurate in the English Church did not end with his separation from it. His justification in the Apologia of his final beliefs pleaded the case for all English converts, improved their position and increased their numbers. His opposition of an intelligent intellectual freedom in religious study, which brought him into conflict with individuals in the Roman Catholic hierarchy, have survived him in their influence on Catholic thinking...." - Foreword from Journey into Faith:The Anglican Life Of John Henry Newman

By C. H. Talbot

This book is in good condition. There is some wear to the front, back and spine of the cover boards and also some staining. The edges of the cover boards are worn and the corners are bumped. The pages are yellowed and tanned but free of any markings. "The texts gathered together in the present volume provide a cross-section of the religious life of the eighth century difficult to parallel elsewhere. Two biographies of the archbishops who initiated the missionary enterprise on the Continent show how their labours transformed the face of Europe within the space of a single generation, whilst the life of one of their disciples illustrates how their work was continued. The correspondence of St. Boniface bring into closer focus the kind of difficulties they encountered and introduces us into the homely atmosphere of their friends, relatives, and well-wishers. Two further biographies, one of the abbot of the first monastery to be founded in Germany, the other of the abbess Leoba, give an illuminating picture of the beginnings of monastic life amidst barbarian surroundings and throw light on the characters and attainments of the men and women who embarked on this hazardous adventure. Finally, the description of Willibald's travels through Italy, the Greek archipelago and the Holy Land show the devotion, allied to a spirit of adventure, which animated these early pilgrims and missionaries. Bishops, priests, monks, nuns and simple clerics flit through these pages and tell us their unvarnished tale, which, slight though it may be in certain cases, deeply impresses by contrast with the grim background against which it unfold...." - General Introduction from The Anglo-Saxon Missionaries in Germany

I have tried to see these men and women in the setting of the ordinary day-to-day life of their times, not as persons set apart or dissimilar from ourselves to-day, since the progress of time works no change in the basic stuff of humanity nor in the ultimate purpose of its creation." - Preface, Stars Appearing: Lives of Sixty-Eight Saints Of The Anglican Calendar
